La Signare Sets Sights on Suwannee River Stakes

Returning to Gulfstream Park for the first time in almost a year, La Signare will attempt to recapture her stakes-winning form Feb. 6 when she takes on a field of seven older fillies and mares in the  $100,000 Suwannee River Stakes (G3T). 

Trainer Brendan Walsh said he couldn't be more pleased to bring the well-traveled La Signare back to the site of her last stakes win.

"She had a good year last year. We just gave her a break because she was on the go all year," said Walsh. "There wasn't anything wrong with her. We just wanted to freshen her up. She's been working good. She's another one who loves Gulfstream. She won a stakes there last year, so it looks like a good race to start back."

Owned in partnership by Madaket Stables, Tim Cambron, Anna Cambron, and Bradley Thoroughbreds, the 6-year-old daughter of Siyouni captured the Sand Springs Stakes in March of 2020 at Gulfstream before clashing with some of the best turf fillies in the country during the rest of a 2020 racing season. Raced exclusively in graded company after the Sand Springs, she came in second in the Old Forester Mint Julep Stakes (G3T) and third in the Longines Churchill Distaff Turf Mile (G2T) at Churchill Downs before closing out her year with a fifth-place finish in the Flower Bowl (G1T) at Belmont Park.

"She was competitive everywhere she went," said Walsh. "If she improves a small bit again this year, maybe there will be a big one in there somewhere along the line."

The Suwannee River, a 1 1/8-mile turf race, will highlight Saturdays 12-race program, along with the $100,000 Ladies Turf Sprint, a five-furlong dash for older fillies and mares.

While La Signare is one of only two 6-year-olds in the Suwannee River filed, Walsh said he wouldn't be surprised if the mare uses her considerable experience to best her competition on Saturday. 

"She can be a little quirky, temperamentally, but we've gotten to know her through the years and learned to manager her in what seems to be the best way for her," Walsh said. "As they get a little bit older, you hope they get a little more sensible.

"I think she likes to get some cover and track some speed," Walsh said. "When she gets some cover, she switches off and hopefully we get that on Saturday."

Tyler Gaffalione is scheduled to ride La Signare for the first time since partnering her to victory in the Sand Springs. The pair will leave from post 3.
