Retired jockey James "J.J." Sunseri, 70, of Erlanger, Ky., died Jan. 2 from injuries he sustained in a Dec. 13 auto accident. He was 70.
Based on Sunseri's obituary at Linnemann Family Funteral Homes, he was born in Italy and graduated from Erie Cathedral Prep School in Pennsylvania. Sunseri spent his adult life as a professional jockey with more than 10,000 mounts over 45 years. He has raced in Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Illinois, Indiana, and Florida.
His Equibase Thoroughbred racing stats are listed from 1978-2013, with 545 wins and purse earnings over $3 million. He guided longshot Revolver Six to a runner-up finish in the 2004 WEBN Stakes at Turfway Park.
The auto accident occurred near Belterra Park, according to WKRC news, and no one else was seriously injured.
