Northern California-Based Turf Writer Senzell Dies

Description:

Turf Writer Howard Senzell, who wrote the "Howard's Picks" column covering the Sonoma County Fair meet at Santa Rosa for the Press Democrat, died Jan. 24. He was 74.

According to the Press Democrat obituary, Senzell also contributed high school and college sports coverage as a freelancer. The Evansville, Ind., native began writing about horse racing immediately upon earning his degree from Indiana University, working for Daily Racing Form.

Senzell and his wife Kathy founded a Southern California ranch for the rehabilitation of Thoroughbreds that were healing from an injury or surgery or that would benefit from some rest and recreation. He also helped manage stables for some owners.

They eventually sold that ranch and moved to Santa Rosa about 30 years ago, according to the paper.

Senzell's family suggests memorial donations to the ALS Association, 5701 Sunrise Blvd., Citrus Heights, CA 95610, or online at www.als.org/donate.
