Speed is the focus in South Florida Feb. 13 with the running of the Gulfstream Park Sprint Stakes (G3) and Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint Stakes (G3T).
The two $100,000 races for older males drew fields of seven apiece, with Mischevious Alex topping the former race at six furlongs on the main track and Leinster heading the latter at five-eighths on turf.
Cash is King and LC Racing's Mischevious Alex is already a dual grade winner, having won the Gotham Stakes (G3) and Swale Stakes (G3) last year as a 3-year-old when trained by John Servis. This year in a single start under the direction of trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., the Into Mischief colt was a 3 3/4-length winner of an allowance optional claiming race Jan. 10 in which he dashed six furlongs in 1:09.67.
"On his form before, it showed he was a very good horse. He had run at Gulfstream before and his race (in the Swale) was just as good," Joseph said. "I didn't think we had him fully cranked and to see him win like that and quicken away nicely was very impressive."
Saturday's $250,000 General George Stakes (G3) at Laurel Park had been under consideration, but Mischevious Alex's connections opted to remain in Florida.
"The weather here looks a lot better than there, where there's snow and cold. We're going to ship him for his next race. There's no sense shipping him now and shipping him back," said Joseph, who listed the April 3 Carter Handicap (G1) at Aqueduct Racetrack as a long-term objective.
Shadybrook Farm's Cajun Brother and Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and William Branch's Frosted Grace also come off victories over the Gulfstream Park main track this winter.
Making his first start of 2021 in the Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint is Leinster, who last competed Nov. 7 at Keeneland, where he ran third in the Breeder's Cup Turf Sprint (G1T). A half brother to 2018 champion turf male Stormy Liberal, the 6-year-old son of Majestic Warrior is a three-time graded stakes winner for owners Amy Dunne, Brenda Miley, Westrock Stables, and Jean Wilkinson.
“He’s doing really well. We sent him to Ocala for about a month. He was on the farm and I picked him up when I got to Florida in early December. He’s been here two months and all systems are ‘go,’” said trainer Rusty Arnold, whose stable is based at Palm Meadows Training Center.
Arnold also entered Pat Madden's Borracho in the Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint.
Smart Remark, High Crime, Harry's Ontheloose, Shared Legacy, and Inter Miami complete the field in a race in which Leinster figures as the odds-on favorite.
The Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint is the sixth race at 2:34 p.m. ET, and the Gulfstream Park Sprint goes as the 11th race at 5:16.
Saturday's 12-race program will also feature a mandatory payout of the 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot wager.
