Majestic Steps breaks her maiden at Santa Anita Park

An impressive winner of her U.S. debut going six furlongs on turf Jan. 2, the Phil D'Amato-trained Majestic Steps and four other former European runners bring a foreign flavor to the $100,000 Sweet Life Stakes (G3T) at Santa Anita Park Feb. 14.

Owned by Michael House, Majestic Steps stylishly broke her maiden at Santa Anita Jan. 2. Midpack early, she knifed her way through traffic, hit the front, and notched a 1 1/2-length victory. The win came in her fifth career start following four losses in Ireland.

Off at 8-1 odds in her U.S. debut, the daughter of Footstepsinthesand figures to be a much shorter price in the Sweet Life, a six-furlong dash on the Santa Anita grass course. She is 7-2 on the morning line.

D'Amato will also be represented by another Irish-born starter in the Sweet Life, Going Global, idle since defeating 13 rivals going seven furlongs in a race on synthetic Nov. 11 at Dundalk in Ireland. The Mehmas filly races for Saul Gevertz, Michael Nentwig, Ray Pagano, and John Rochfort.

Other foreign-born horses in the 12-horse lineup include Nimbostratus, Go Greta, and Royal Address.

Freedom Flyer, Five Pics Please, Pizzazz, and Plum Sexy are the leading contenders of those foaled in North America. Freedom Flyer and Five Pics Please were last-out sprint winners on turf at Santa Anita.
