Airdrie Stud's second-crop sire Upstart sired his first black-type winner Feb. 14 when his son Resurrector won the Clasico Jorge Washington Stakes at Camarero Race Track. The colt owned by Clinton Stable has been first or second five times out of six starts.
Bred in Kentucky by Airdrie's Brereton Jones, the 3-year-old colt is out of the Lawyer Ron daughter Ron's Girl. The mare is a half sister to stakes winner and stakes producer Mindy Sue (Pleasantly Perfect), to multiple stakes-placed winner Our Dark Knight (Medaglia d'Oro ), and to winner and graded stakes producer Drift to the Lead (Yonaguska), who is the dam of grade 1-placed stakes winner Catch My Drift.
Confederacion Hipica de Puerto Rico bought Resurrector for $30,000 at the 2020 Ocala Breeders' Sales July 2-Year-Olds in Training and Horses of Racing Age Sale from the Golden Noguez consignment.
Upstart, a multiple graded stakes-winning son of Flatter , was the sixth-leading North American freshman sire last year with $912,213 in progeny earnings. His first crop includes 23 winners and two other black-type performers led by multiple grade 1-placed winner Reinvestment Risk, who was second in the Champagne Stakes (G1) and Runhappy Hopeful Stakes (G1). Upstart also sired multiple stakes-placed winner Uptown, who was second in the $100,000 Best of Ohio Cleveland Kindergarten Stakes at Thistledown.
Upstart stands for $10,000 this year.
