After winning her first two starts by a combined 7 1/2 lengths, Alex and JoAnn Lieblong's Abrogate will test the stakes waters for the first time Feb. 28 when she faces an expected seven other 3-year-old fillies in the $150,000 Dixie Belle Stakes at Oaklawn Park.
While Abrogate steps up in class, the daughter of Outwork will otherwise enjoy familiar footing as she'll try six furlongs for a third straight time. Trained by Steve Asmussen, Abrogate delivered a spectacular, front-end maiden special weight debut Nov. 12 at Churchill Downs when she drew off in the stretch for a six-length score.
In her second start—her 3-year-old debut—Abrogate handled an off track when she delivered another clear victory Jan. 24 in the mud at Oaklawn. Since that effort, in which she picked up experience on the track, Abrogate has turned in a pair of works on the local surface.
Abrogate has been favored in both her efforts, sent off at 3-2 on debut and 4-5 last out.
Awaiting Abrogate Sunday will be Valene Farms' homebred Big Time, who returns to sprinting after an off-the-board finish in an allowance level race going 1 1/16 miles Feb. 12 at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots. Before that effort, the Louisiana-bred daughter of Astrology closed out 2020 with a pair of stakes wins for state-breds at Fair Grounds—both at six furlongs.
The field features two other stakes winners in Miss Twenty, who won last year's Prairie Gold Lassie Stakes at Prairie Meadows, and Heart Full of Soul, who won the Shakopee Juvenile Stakes at Canterbury Park.
Starting from the outside will be Fox Hill Farm's Windmill, who will try stakes company after debuting with a four-length score in a six-furlong maiden race Jan. 23 at Oaklawn. Windmill, a daughter of Street Sense , is trained by Larry Jones.
Also set for her stakes debut is Klein Racing's Goin' Good, who will try dirt for the first time after last year winning a maiden race and allowance level race on turf for Eclipse Award-winning trainer Brad Cox.
Sunday could prove a big day for the Lieblongs and Asmussen as they also have Bye Bye J in the $150,000 Downthedustyroad Breeders' Stakes, a six-furlong test for Arkansas-breds. Bye Bye J, a 5-year-old daughter of Uncaptured, earned a clear victory in last year's edition of the Downthedustyroad Breeders' Stakes and she's undefeated in four previous races against state-breds.
