Spendthrift Farm homebred Missy P. will make her debut March 12 when she faces a field of six competitors in a $61,000 maiden special weight over 5 1/2 furlongs at Santa Anita Park.
Trained by Richard Mandella, the 3-year-old filly has quite the legacy to uphold, as she is a full sister to grade 1 winner Mia Mischief (by Into Mischief —Greer Lynn, by Speightstown ). Spendthrift Farm manager Ned Toffey said the filly resembles her sister in stature, a trait they hope will be directly correlated to success on the track.
"She's similar to Mia Mischief but probably a little bit bigger—a little bit more substantial," said Toffey. "She's a beautiful filly and very powerfully made.
"She certainly looks like she's very, very talented, and she is actually a filly that we had entered in a yearling sale. We debated long and hard to sell or keep her, but she's always been an exceptional physical."
Missy P. has been breezing steadily over the Santa Anita dirt. The filly most recently posted a three-furlong move March 8 in :36 flat. The time was the second fastest of 18 horses at the distance.
"Richard has been happy with her," said Toffey, adding that the decision to debut Missy P. as a sophomore stems from a set of minor setbacks during early training. "Over time there have been a couple minor setbacks but they feel like she's doing well now, and she's shown a lot of talent in the mornings. Richard does a great job of giving a horse time, and he's done that with her. Hopefully that will pay off for us. Beyond that, we're guessing just like everyone else as to what she'll do. We're keeping our fingers crossed."
Missy P. will break from the far outside post 7 in Friday's race under Flavien Prat.
Multiple graded stakes winner Mia Mischief accrued a 10-7-2 record from 23 starts and earnings of just over $1.2 million while racing from 2 to 5. Trained by Steve Asmussen, the mare was owned and campaigned through the majority of her career by Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt, Heider Family Stables, and Madaket Stables.
Offered by ELiTE in 2019 to The November Sale, Fasig-Tipton's premier breeding stock sale, Mia Mischief was purchased by Stonestreet Stables for $2.4 million. She would make her final four starts in 2020 for her new owner, which concluded with a second-place finish in the Madison Stakes (G1) at Keeneland last July.
