Prior to her unveiling, Richard Mandella compared Missy P. to another great mare he trained, the four-time champion Beholder. The Spendthrift Farm homebred will have a ways to go towards following in Beholder's hoofprints, but certainly took a giant stride in the right direction March 12 with an eye-popping debut victory in a maiden special weight at Santa Anita Park.
A full sister to grade 1 winner Mia Mischief, Missy P. was bet down heavily at the windows on the birth of a series of impressive works leading up to her debut. Included in these drills was a bullet :34.80 three-eighths from the gate Jan. 27 and a six-furlong breeze in 1:11.80 Feb. 26.
Breaking from the far outside post in the field of seven, the daughter of Into Mischief rocketed from the gate and quickly vied for the lead alongside the Bob Baffert-trained Reem. Content to sit a half-length behind Reem as the pair clicked the first quarter in :22.16, Missy P. was nudged by rider Flavien Prat turning for home. Reem clung to her lead down the lane following a :45.70 half-mile but was overtaken by the strapping bay mid-stretch as Missy P. coasted to the wire a 9 1/2 length winner. Reem held on for second over a rallying Shell Shock.
Missy P. stopped the timer in 1:03.71 for the 5 1/2 furlongs on the main track.
