The two-day Gold Coast March Yearling Sale gets underway March 15 and Magic Millions are hoping the momentum from recent major sales in Australasia will roll on to Queensland.
The first half of the 420-lot catalog will be presented to buyers from 10 a.m. local time Monday morning and Queensland locals will be hoping to source their next star from a sale that has an impressive roll of honor.
Multiple group 1 winners Buffering and Spirit Of Boom are graduates of the March Yearling Sale, along with Winning Rupert, Boomsara, Wishful Thinker, Master Jamie, and Apache Chase.
Falling a week after the record-breaking Adelaide Yearling Sale, which saw the 15-year record smashed three times in the opening session, Magic Millions' bloodstock manager Clint Donovan is optimistic of a productive sale after receiving good feedback from prospective buyers.
"Inspections have been flat stick since Friday and the feedback from buyers is largely positive," Donovan told ANZ Bloodstock News. "It's testament to the Queensland breeders and the product they've presented at the sale.
"The hard work has been done now and we are looking forward to Lot 1 entering the ring."
All lots offered have been subject to the first payment for QTIS and a record 137 lots are BOBS eligible.
Mizzy to be Offered at Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale
Talented racemare Mizzy, who finished second to Krone in Saturday's Coolmore Classic (G1), is set to go through the ring at the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale in May.
The Anthony Cummings-trained mare has finished runner-up at elite-level on her last two starts, with a nose second to Savatiano in the Heineken Canterbury Stakes (G1) proceeding Saturday's effort in the Coolmore.
The 5-year-old is a dual group 2 winner, having won the Schweppes Sheraco Stakes (G2) and Tab Golden Pendant (G2) in 2019, and will likely be one of the most sought-after prospects at the National Broodmare Sale.
The Zoustar mare will follow her dam Missy Cummings, second dam Lady Knockout, and third dam Prime Again, who were all stakes winners prior to a stud career.
"She will present prospective buyers with an incredible opportunity," breeder and part-owner Rob Crabtree said. "Physically she is a stunning animal—as nice a mare as I've ever seen. I bred her, her mother, and also raced her grandmother. She gets her speed from the Magnus and Zoustar blood, but also some stamina from Serheed.
"Mizzy is in career best form and her last three runs have been fantastic in group 1s. In the Oakleigh Plate she got back from barrier 15 and was 12-wide on the turn and yet still managed to be beaten less than three lengths. Her last two seconds have been outstanding. (Saturday) she again came from a wide draw and was right there at the finish."
Crabtree said Mizzy would continue to race until the National Sale, with the Emancipation Stakes (G2) at Rosehill March 27 set to be her next start.
"The plan is to start her next in the Emancipation Stakes in a couple of weeks and then she will tell us where we go next.
"The National Sale is well-timed for any buyers to look at the Tattersall's Tiara—there's so much upside. She will make a wonderful broodmare."
Mizzy will be one of the headline acts of what is shaping up to be an exciting lineup of fillies and mares in the Newgate consignment.
"We are honored to be entrusted to consign such a race offering as Mizzy," Newgate's managing director Henry Field said. "A superior racehorse in career best form. Phenomenally, her mother, grandmother, and great grandmother were all, like her, very good racemares. Every inch of her makeup suggests she will also be a truly elite producer once her racing days are over."
Magic Millions bloodstock manager, Clint Donovan, is delighted a mare of Mizzy's quality is set to go under the hammer at the Gold Coast.
"Mizzy is a prospect of the highest order and she joins a mouth-watering list of race fillies and broodmares for the National Sale." said Donovan. "We'd like to thank the owners for entrusting the sale of Mizzy with Magic Millions.
"We are pumped to be releasing the catalog in the next few weeks."
The sale will also include an attractive lineup of fillies and mares who are part of the Shadwell Stud Australasia unreserved dispersal.
The Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale will begin May 25, with entries set to close March 19.
