Longacres Mile Tops 15 Thoroughbred Stakes at Emerald

Anothertwistafate wins the 2020 Longacres Mile at Emerald Downs
Emerald Downs announced a stakes schedule of 15 Thoroughbred stakes worth $820,000 for its racing season that begins May 19, topped by the $100,000 Longacres Mile Handicap (G3). The Washington track also plans to run two small stakes for Quarter Horses Aug. 22.
The stakes action begins with the $50,000 Coca-Cola Stakes for 3-year-old fillies June 20 and finishes with the $70,000 Gottstein Futurity for 2-year-olds on closing day, Sept. 23.
Most of the stakes will be run on Sundays, including the 86th renewal of the Longacres Mile Aug. 15. Also that day is the $50,000 Emerald Distaff for older fillies and mares.
The Longacres Mile retains the same purse as in 2020 when the track ran a COVID-19-impacted meet. The race had been worth $200,000 or more from 1996-2019.
The 2020 Longacres Mile was won by Peter Redekop's Anothertwistafate under Juan Gutierrez for trainer Blaine Wright. The Scat Daddy horse went on to win the San Gabriel Stakes (G2T) in January at Santa Anita Park for Southern California trainer Peter Miller.
Most other stakes rise from last year when $40,000 was the most common stakes purse for Thoroughbreds. The Gottstein Futurity also rose from $60,000.
Director of racing Bret Anderson has received applications from 69 trainers totaling 840 horses through March 16 and 340 horses are currently on the grounds, the track said in a release.
