Essential Quality wins the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park
Five weeks in advance of the 147th running of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1), bettors made unbeaten Essential Quality the 4-1 favorite over "All Other 3-Year-Olds" and Concert Tour , who both closed at 5-1 in the fifth and final pool of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which concluded a three-day run March 28.
The Brad Cox-trained 2-year-old male champion Essential Quality, perfect in four starts with wins in the Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (G1), TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile Presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (G1), and Southwest Stakes (G3), is expected to headline the April 3 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2) at Keeneland.
Unbeaten San Vicente (G2) and Rebel (G2) stakes winner Concert Tour will run next in the April 10 Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn Park for six-time Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Bob Baffert.
Life Is Good , another unbeaten Baffert trainee, had been favored at 2-1 over Essential Quality at the close of Pool 4 of the KDFW, but was removed from the Triple Crown trail due to a minor ankle chip discovered after a morning work almost a week out from the opening of Pool 5.
Wagering on Big Lake in Pool 5 was suspended after the morning line was unveiled due to the colt emerging from his third-place Rebel finish with an injury.

Total handle for the March 26-28 KDFW pool—the final future wager pool in advance of the May 1 Kentucky Derby—was $369,695 ($242.140 in the Win pool and $127,555 in Exactas). Since last November, a total of $1,780,403 has been bet on future wagers for the Kentucky Derby and Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1).
