The third session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale left buyers on the grounds of the Central Florida auction house wanting more April 14. With three more days of the breeze show left to complete, buyers continue to funnel in ahead of the world's largest 2-year-old sale which promises plenty of talent at all price points.
The standout worker on Wednesday was Hip 576, a filly by Ashford Stud stallion Cupid who worked the fastest quarter-mile in :20 2/5. Consigned by Q Bar J Thoroughbreds, the filly was bred in Virginia by Daybreak Stables out of the Yes It's True mare Callipepla.
"We loved her," said consignor Quincy Adams of Q Bar J Thoroughbreds. "She's a big, scopey filly with lots of muscle and she was a pinhook. We bought her as a yearling at Timonium and she's just thrived. Since the day we bought her she's gotten better every single day. She's been working well, and we thought for sure she would work in :20 and change, but I wasn't thinking :20 2/5. Just listening to the guys talk she galloped out big, but she's just a really good filly and she has a great mind."
Adams purchased Hip 576 for $42,000 from the consignment of Daybreak Stables to the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Eastern Fall Yearling Sale. The filly's extended female family includes La Ville Rouge, dam of 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) victor Barbaro.
With a total of 10 horses for sale under the Q Bar J banner, Adams said there is plenty to look forward to during the latter half of the breeze shows leading up to the auction's April 20 start.
"We also have a couple New York-bred colts (Hips 1047 and 1111) that breeze later in the week that we think a lot of as well," said Adams. "It's nice to see the stands this full of people showing interest. There are plenty of buyers in the stands watching the under tack show. I'm thrilled with the turnout so far."
The fastest eighth-mile time of the day was :10 which was achieved by 28 juveniles. The under tack show continues Thursday at 8:00 a.m. ET with Hip No.'s 609-811 slated to work. As of Wednesday evening, 195 horses had been withdrawn from the sale which runs April 20-23.
