Sir Wellington and Jaxon Traveler , heads apart in the Gazebo Stakes March 20 at Oaklawn Park, renew their rivalry in the $200,000, six-furlong Bachelor Stakes at the Arkansas track April 24.
The two stakes-winning 3-year-old sprinters produced an exciting finish last month with Sir Wellington prevailing in a photo. Jaxon Traveler, who initially chased the pace and fell back to third while racing erratically, got in gear once angled outside but rallied too late.
Sir Wellington won his second stakes race following a victory in the Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile Stakes Dec. 12 at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots for owner Xtreme Racing Stables.
Mac Robertson trains the son of Palace , who has compiled a record of three wins and two seconds in six starts.
Jaxon Traveler, a Munnings colt owned by West Point Thoroughbreds and Marvin Delfiner and trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, previously beat Sir Wellington by four lengths in frontrunning fashion last year when they raced at Laurel Park in an allowance optional claimer. Jaxon Traveler later won the Maryland Juvenile Futurity there before he was given the winter off.
The six-horse Bachelor is completed by last-out winners Bob's Edge and Sea to Success , plus proven stakes competitors Gagetown and Cazadero . The latter, also trained by Asmussen, is a graded stakes-winning juvenile who ran fourth in the Gazebo in his seasonal bow.
