Global trade was alive and well April 21 at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, as Katsumi Yoshida went to $1 million for an Arrogate filly via an Internet bid. The filly was the second horse of the day to surpass the seven-figure mark.
Consigned by Mayberry Farm, agent, as Hip 463, the gray or roan filly was bred by Town & Country Horse Farms out of multiple grade 2 winner and multiple grade 1-placed Amen Hallelujah (by Montbrook). She was purchased as a yearling by Nice Guys Stables for $150,000 from Taylor Made Sales Agency's consignment to the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
"I loved her since she stepped foot on the farm out of the September sale," said April Mayberry. "She did everything she was supposed to do from day one. She has a wonderful mind, great constitution. She is patient and just a lovely filly.
"I thought she would be our sales topper, and obviously, we're thrilled that she went a little over our expectations. I absolutely love them (offspring of Arrogate)."
During the OBS Spring Sale under tack show, the filly breezed an eighth-mile in :10.
"This is a nice filly, and we wanted to give her a shot through the ring and see what she brought," said Steve Spielman of Nice Guys Stables. "We sell, too. We don't only race. We didn't expect this much, but we knew she was a nice filly."
Offspring of the late stallion Arrogate—the Juddmonte champion who was euthanized in June of 2020 after battling a neurological illness that cut his stud career tragically short—have proved popular at the juvenile sales so far, and most especially during Wednesday's session of the OBS Spring Sale. Minutes after Hip 463 sold through the ring, a colt (Hip 490) by the multi-millionaire earner was purchased for $750,000 by Mike Talla and West Point Thoroughbreds from the consignment of Wavtertree Stables (Ciaran Dunne), agent.
