Having failed to win on dirt and synthetic surfaces, Petruchio returns to grass to face five 3-year-olds in the one-mile $100,000 Singletary Stakes at Santa Anita Park April 25.
The gelded son of Into Mischief , who broke his maiden on turf at Del Mar last fall, was third over the winter in the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2) on dirt behind Spielberg and The Great One before disappointing in the El Camino Real Derby over Golden Gate's Tapeta surface. In the latter race, he pushed the pace and backed up to sixth, beaten 13 1/4 lengths by Rombauer . A homebred, he races for owners Ramona and Perry Bass II.
Jockey Mike Smith, up for his maiden win and his show finish in the Los Alamitos Futurity, rides the 2-1 morning-line favorite for trainer Richard Mandella.
Man Friday , a maiden winner in his seventh start, merits attention, as do Sword Zorro and Gator Shining , both of whom stretch out from turf sprints
Sword Zorro (Zoffany ) is a full brother to Ventura Storm , a group 1 winner in Italy and group 2 winner in Australia. Sword Zorro won once in five starts last year in Ireland before running fifth in the Baffle Stakes in his only stateside appearance Feb. 5.
Sensemaker and Coastal Kid complete the field.
