Brilliant undefeated filly Treve is one of five finalists for the Cartier Racing Awards Horse of the Year, Europe's equivalent of the Eclipse Awards, as finalists were announced Nov. 8.
The nine Cartier Racing Awards will be revealed and presented during a ceremony before an invited audience of 340 at the Dorchester Hotel in London, England, the evening of Nov. 12.
The five horses nominated for Cartier Horse of the Year are Treve; Moonlight Cloud and Novellist, both undefeated this year; and Sky Lantern and Al Kazeem, each three-time group I winners in 2013.
The Cartier Older Horse nominations include three horses unbeaten during 2013: Farhh, Moonlight Cloud, and Novellist. Of the others, Declaration of War finished a close third in the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) after winning two group I races in Europe earlier in the year, and Al Kazeem captured three group I events.
Cartier 3-Year-Old Colt award nominees include Godolphin's QIPCO Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-I) winner Dawn Approach, trained by Jim Bolger. who is also responsible for Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby (Ire-I) winner Trading Leather; Coolmore's recent Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. I) winner Magician; Investec Derby (Eng-I) victor Ruler Of The World; and the Richard Hannon-trained Toronado, who took the QIPCO Sussex Stakes (Eng-I).
In the 3-year-old filly category, unbeaten Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Fr-I) winner Treve goes head-to-head with Sky Lantern, who had three group I wins over a mile this year. Other nominees are Investec Oaks (Eng-I) winner Talent, Etihad Airways Irish One Thousand Guineas (Eng-I) winner Just The Judge, and Chicquita, who captured the Darley Irish Oaks (Ire-I).
Kingston Hill and Toormore are unbeaten juveniles vying for the Cartier 2-Year-Old Colt Award, along with Breeders' cup Juvenile Turf (gr. IT) victor Outstrip, Sudirman, and War Command, who are all grade/group I winners.
In the 2-year-old filly category, Chriselliam, winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (gr. IT), is nominated, while Rizeena and Vorda have performed at the top level throughout the year. Indonesienne stepped up to victory in the Total Prix Marcel Boussac (Fr-I), and Lucky Kristale was successful in four of her five starts for Newmarket trainer George Margarson.
Cartier Sprinter nominees are Lethal Force, decisive winner of both the Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Eng-I) and Darley July Cup (Eng-I) from Society Rock. Three contenders from Ireland–Gordon Lord Byron, Sole Power, and Slade Power–also are nominated.
The Cartier Stayer Award could go to Her Majesty The Queen's Estimate, who provided her owner with a Gold Cup (Eng-I) success at Royal Ascot. Red Cadeaux, Brown Panther, Altano, and Tac De Boistron are the othe nominees.
"We have had a tremendous 2013 flat season which has thrilled from start to finish," Cartier racing consultant Harry Herbert said in a release. "The Cartier Racing Awards honor the horses who have reached the top in our wonderful sport and we are set for a terrific evening Nov. 12 when the winners are unveiled."
