Making the Grade: Corfu (también en español)

Making the Grade, which will run through the 2014 Belmont Stakes, focuses on the winners of the big races, usually from the previous weekend, who could impact the next Triple Crown. We’ll be taking a close look at impressive winners and evaluating their chances to win classic races based on ability, running style, connections (owner, trainer, jockey) and pedigree.
This week we kick off the 2013-2014 edition by taking a look at Corfu, winner of the Saratoga Special Stakes on Aug. 11 at Saratoga Race Course.

Corfu won his debut at Saratoga Race Course on July 25 and impressed Eclipse Award-winning trainer Todd Pletcher enough to wheel him back 17 days later in the Saratoga Special. The quick turnaround did not hurt Corfu, who showed plenty of determination to deny Sanford Stakes winner Wired Bryan by a nose.
Ability: It is very difficult to tell this early in the season whether a 2-year-old is supremely gifted or simply ahead of his or her peers developmentally. A precocious 2-year-old can put together a nice record and bag some big stakes before fall hits and the rest of his crop begins to catch up.
In Corfu’s case, he clearly looks like a precocious colt, but I also think there is room to develop and improve.
Corfu boosted his Equibase Speed Figure by eight points in his second start from an 87 to a 95 despite the quick turnaround. He did so when stretching out from five furlongs to 6 ½ furlongs and showed he was plenty game when digging in bravely late to hold off Wired Bryan after setting an absolutely blistering pace.  
Corfu was purchased by owners Michael Tabor, John Magnier, and Derrick Smith for $675,000 at the 2013 Barretts Equine Ltd. March sale of selected 2-year-olds in training. The purchase price topped the sale, indicating that Corfu was a standout even before his first start.
“We've liked [Corfu] all along since we purchased him at Barretts,” Pletcher said. “We felt like he was a very fast horse there, and we felt like he was a precocious 2-year-old. We're happy to get him started here and happy to have him win first time out.
“We were monitoring pretty closely how he bounced out of his maiden race and just wanted to decide whether we could turn him back on fairly short rest. He came back with a very good breeze, and I felt like that was the answer we were looking for. Luckily, he showed up [in the Saratoga Special] and had enough to hold on in a pretty fast race.”
Pletcher said after the Saratoga Special that Corfu came out of the race in good shape and would be considered for the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes at seven furlongs on Sept. 2.
Running style: When evaluating a horse’s potential as a candidate for the Triple Crown races, it is easy to dismiss horses who are need-the-lead types with basically one speed – all out. The last horse to win the Kentucky Derby leading from start to finish was War Emblem in 2002 and before that you have to go all the way back to Winning Colors in 1988 to find a Derby winner who led at every point of call.
Right now, Corfu looks like a colt who wants to leave the starting gate and run as fast as he can for as long as he can. But as 2-year-olds mature, top trainers can often get them to harness that speed and ration it during a race.
Let’s be honest, slow horses don’t win top races. Speed is extremely valuable regardless of distance, but in order to win at 1 ¼ miles a racehorse must have something left for that final quarter-mile.

If Pletcher, with the help of Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez (one of the best there is at harnessing a horse’s speed), can teach Corfu to relax even just a little bit, he could turn into a very nice colt when stretching out.
Even so, the Derby is a long, long way off and Pletcher and his team have a lot of work to do with Corfu to get him to Churchill as a legitimate contender.
In the near future, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile is a race that recent history shows rewards early speed. Since War Pass led from start to finish in 2007, the Juvenile winner was either first or second at every point of call every year except for 2009, when Vale of York rallied from fifth early on the then-synthetic track at Santa Anita Park.
If Corfu doesn’t turn out to be a classic-type horse, the Juvenile would undoubtedly be a nice signature victory on a resume.
Connections: Corfu’s trainer, Todd Pletcher, won five Eclipse Awards as outstanding trainer from 2004 to 2010, including four straight from 2004 to 2007. He won his first classic in 2007 when Rags to Riches became the first filly to win the Belmont Stakes since Tanya in 1905. He picked up his first win in the Kentucky Derby with Super Saver in 2010.
John Velazquez has ridden Corfu in each of his two races. Velazquez is a Hall of Fame rider at the top of his game, and when Johnny V. is going good there really is no one better.
The ownership group of John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith represents the powerful international Coolmore breeding and racing operation. This is a group familiar with classic success having dominated the 3-year-old classics in Europe, and especially in Ireland, for decades. Tabor won the Kentucky Derby with Thunder Gulch in 1995 and Tabor and Smith raced Rags to Riches in partnership.
Pedigree: Corfu is by Malibu Moon, who sired 2013 Kentucky Derby winner Orb and has become an elite stallion. One could make a very compelling case that Malibu Moon is the top active sire at stud by 1992 Horse of the Year and influential sire A.P. Indy. Malibu Moon’s other stars include champion Declan’s Moon and Grade 1 winners Life At Ten, Devil May Care, and Malibu Mint.
Malibu Moon sires elite runners with a combination of speed and stamina that makes his progeny dangerous at a wide range of distances.
None of Corfu’s first three dams – mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother – won a race longer than 6 ½ furlongs. So while Corfu gets a dose of stamina from his sire, the maternal half of his pedigree definitely slants toward speed. His maternal great-grandmother was a talented, multiple stakes winner sprinting, but neither his dam nor his second dam ever competed in a stakes race.
There is one significant note regarding Corfu’s maternal family – his dam, Fashion Cat, is a half-sister (different sire [father], same dam [mother]) to 2003 Haskell Invitational and Blue Grass Stakes winner Peace Rules. Third in the Kentucky Derby and second in the Travers, Peace Rules could carry his speed a long way. That name alone provides a dash of classic hope from this half of Corfu’s pedigree.
