Fiesty Fist wins his debut at Evangeline Downs

Whispering Oaks Farm's Fiesty Fist  splashed home in his debut May 20 at Evangeline Downs to become the first winner for freshman sire, Iron Fist .

Bred by Carrol J. Castille, Fiesty Fist raced just off the pacesetters early on behind a :24.02 opening quarter before forging his way to the front with two furlongs left to run. Under steady encouragement from jockey Kevin Smith, the bay gelding surged to the wire, holding Corn Pop safe by a length at the wire. Trained by Steven Flint, Fiesty Fit ran the 4 1/2 furlongs in :54.46 on a muddy track.

Fiesty Fist is the third winner produced from the Roman Ruler mare Sheza Roman Ruler. Hailing from the family of graded stakes winners Catalina Cruiser, Royal Flag, and Eagle, Sheza Roman Ruler has a filly by One Liner foaled this year.

Iron Fist sold for $1,550,000 as a yearling at the 2013 Keeneland September Sale before winning nine of 24 starts in his racing career. The son of Tapit, a five time stakes winner, scored his biggest victory in the 2017 Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap (G3). He was trained by Steve Asmussen and raced from the ages of 2 to 5, amassing earnings of $1,104,199.

A half brother to grade 1 winner Sweet Lulu and a full brother to grade 2 stakes winner and sire Anchor Down, Iron Fist stands for $6,500 at Whispering Oaks Farm in Louisiana.
