The margin of a neck made all the difference May 23 at Sunray Park as Who's Laughin Now  prevailed in a duel in the second race under Alejandro Medellin. The victory marked the 1,000th North American Thoroughbred win for the jockey.

Medellin added to his tally in the 10th race with a 4 1/2-length score aboard Arimony .

A native of Mexico City, Medellin has ridden Thoroughbreds in North America since 2003 and Quarter Horses since 2006, according to Equibase statistics. Through Sunday he has career earnings of $18,880,240 from 7,305 Thoroughbred starts, and from 3,699 Quarter Horse starts has 536 wins and $11,290,516 in earnings.

In November of 2012, Medellin set a Zia Park record by riding seven winners from nine mounts on a single card—five winners were Thoroughbreds and two were Quarter Horses.

Medellin's top Thoroughbred mounts have included Cattleman Prospect , a two-time winner of the Johnie L. Jamison Handicap whose best score came in the New Mexico Cup Classic Championship Sprint; dual New Mexico State University Handicap winner Daddy O; and Hayley's Halo , whose seven black-type wins all came under Medellin.

He is a multiple grade 1-winning jockey aboard Quarter Horses, having won six top-level events aboard First Moonflash, including the Championship at Sunland Park Stakes (G1) twice. He also guided Klassic Strawfly to victory in the Namehimastreaker NM Classic Championship (G1).
