Neither the $150,000 Blame Stakes, nor the $150,000 Shawnee Stakes at Churchill Downs May 29 is a graded race, but their most notable competitors are already of the major stakes variety.
The Blame attracted Tom Durant's multiple graded stakes winner Silver Dust and Lawrence Cordes' Queen's Plate winner Mighty Heart , while the Shawnee lured WinStar Stablemates Racing's grade 1 winner Paris Lights and Walking L Thoroughbreds and Three Chimneys Farm's two-time graded stakes winner Envoutante .
Both races serve as springboards toward richer stakes at Churchill Downs June 26—the Blame to the $600,000 Stephen Foster Stakes (G2), and Shawnee to the $300,000 Fleur de Lis Stakes (G2). Both the Stephen Foster and Fleur de Lis are Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" qualifiers.
The Blame is on the main track at 1 1/8 miles, the Shawnee at 1 1/16 miles.
Silver Dust, a gelded gray son of Tapit , is a seven-time winner from 33 starts. The 7-year-old gelding was the half-length winner of the $150,000 Ben Ali Stakes (G3) April 10 at Keeneland. Trained by Bret Calhoun, Silver Dust will be ridden by Adam Beschizza from post 7.
A win or runner-up finish would push him past $1 million in earnings.
Among the other horses entered in the seven-horse Blame are Steve Landers Racing's Ben Ali runner-up Night Ops and Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider's recent 7 1/4-length allowance optional claiming winner Sprawl .
Mighty Heart, 2020 Canadian Horse of the Year trained by Josie Carroll, exits a third-place finish in his seasonal debut last month in an allowance optional claiming race at Keeneland, in which he lost by little more than a length to South Bend , another Blame starter.
The Blame is named in honor of the nine-time winning champion older horse. Trained by Al Stall Jr., Blame upset Zenyatta in the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Churchill Downs where he was a three-quarter length winner of that year’s Stephen Foster.
Envoutante and Paris Lights Meet Again in Shawnee
Paris Lights and Envoutante both exit the La Troienne Stakes Presented by Twinspires.com (G1) at Churchill Downs April 30 in which the former was sixth and the latter second behind victorious Shedaresthedevil .

Rail-running Envoutante threatened in the stretch but was turned back by last year's Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner. Kenny McPeek trains Envoutante while Hall of Famer Bill Mott conditions Paris Lights.
Last year, Envoutante won the Falls City Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs and $100,000 Remington Park Oaks (G3) at Remington Park. Paris Lights' stakes success at age 3 came in the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) at Saratoga Race Course before she went to the sidelines. She returned this year to win the Distaff Handicap (G3) at Aqueduct Racetrack in her start preceding the La Troienne.
Other prominent entries in the eight-horse Shawnee include La Renoleta , a group 1 winner in her native Argentina, stakes-placed Istan Council , and Miss Bigly , a winner of two in a row against easier competition.
