Following an afternoon of rain the day before, partly cloudy skies, dry conditions, and warm temperatures prevailed in Ocala, Fla., June 3, during the second session of the under tack preview in advance of next week's Ocala Breeders' Sales June Sale of 2-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age.
Topping the day's work tab at a quarter-mile was Hip 258, a chestnut filly from the first crop of Ashford Stud stallion Practical Joke who sped the distance in :21 1/5. Consigned by Jimbo and Torie Gladwell's Top Line Sales, agent, the filly is produced from the stakes-placed Medaglia d'Oro mare Devious d'Oro, a half sister to grade 3 stakes winner Devious Intent, multiple stakes winner Pioneer Spirit, and stakes-placed Virgil Caine.
Bred in Kentucky by White Fox Farm, the filly was previously purchased by Billy Williams for $45,000 at last year's Keeneland September Yearling Sale out of the Taylor Made Sales Agency consignment. She was withdrawn from the OBS Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training in April.
"She was in the April sale (OBS Spring Sale)," said Top Line Sales' Torie Gladwell. "We had her over there, but she came up with a little issue about 45 days before the sale, so she missed two or three breezes. We knew she wasn't going to be ready. We used that sale as kind of a precursor to getting her ready for this sale. She prepped decent but not great for that sale. She learned a lot. We took her home and continued with her training, and from then until now, she has really blossomed and bloomed and turned into a racehorse.
"She prepped really good over here this time," Gladwell continued. "She is a super laidback filly. She's not one that you can just make her do something. She is quiet, smart, she eats good, she's pretty, but she is a filly that will do her own thing when she wants to. Today, she showed up and went out there and did her thing. I was really proud of her. She looked magnificent on the track today. She's a big, stretchy filly with a huge stride."
Top Line Sales also sent out one of the eight co-bullet workers at one furlong with Hip 313, a Maclean's Music filly named Tap in Tune breezing the distance in :10. Bred in Kentucky by James Spry, the filly is out of the unraced Tapit mare Fashion Tap, a half sister to graded stakes winner Berned. This is also the family of grade 1 winner Harmony Lodge and accomplished millionaires Graeme Hall and Magnum Moon.
The filly was purchased at this year's Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale by Lee Rogers for $22,000 from the consignment of Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, agent for the Spry Family Farm.
"She is a completely opposite type compared to the Practical Joke filly," noted Gladwell. "The Practical Joke is probably 16 hands or taller and the Maclean's Music is a smaller filly. She is speedy. She prepped really fast over here, so we knew she would go at least :10 flat in her breeze. We were not sure if she could get :09 4/5. I thought the track was a little faster today because of the rain yesterday (afternoon), but we were really happy with the :10 flat and she went out good after that.
"She did everything right," Gladwell added, "and that's the kind of filly she is. She tries hard every time you turn her loose."
Also recording co-bullet breezes at an eighth-mile were: Hip 242, a colt by Gone Astray consigned by Two Oaks Equine; Hip 255, a filly by Pioneerof the Nile consigned by Hidden Brook, agent; Hip 315, a filly named Speightful Sis, by Country Day, consigned by Silvestre Chavez Thoroughbreds, agent; Hip 319, a Quality Road colt from the consignment of de Meric Sales, agent; a Palace filly (Hip 339) consigned by Omar Ramirez Bloodstock, agent; Hip 345, a gray or roan filly by Street Sense also consigned by de Meric Sales, agent; and Hip 363, a filly by Uncaptured consigned by Blas Perez Stables, agent.
Platinum Beauty (Hip 344) breezed the fastest three furlongs of the session, getting the distance in a sizzling :32 4/5 for consignor Rolling Meadows Farm. From the first crop of Neolithic , the gray or roan filly is out of the stakes-winning Waquoit mare Frost Princess and is a half sister to stakes-placed Gran Greyfrost. Joseph and Helen Barbazon bred the filly in Florida.
The under tack preview continues June 4 at 7:30 a.m. with Hips 371-554 slated to breeze.
