Sommer Velvet breaks her maiden at Pimlico Race Course

Bonita Farm homebred Sommer Velvet  became the first winner for freshman sire and multiple grade 1 winner Dortmund  when she won a five-furlong maiden claiming race June 4 at Pimlico Race Course.

The victory came in the second start for the filly who is the only foal out of the winning Etched  daughter Sommer Something. The mare's granddam is Calipha (by Two Punch), who won the 1994 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (G2) and Reeve Schley Jr. Stakes (G2). Sommer Something's dam, Bay of Bengal, has produced nine winners from 10 to race.

Sommer Velvet was bred in Maryland by Bonita Farm and is now raced by the farm in partnership with Grandview Stables. She ran fourth in her debut on a sloppy Pimlico track May 8 and then put it all together to break her maiden by 1 3/4 lengths for trainer Kevin Boniface. The final time was 1:00.41.

Dortmund, a 9-year-old son of dual classic winner Big Brown  , won five graded stakes and placed in four others for owner Kaleem Shah. He won the Los Alamitos Futurity (G1) at 2 and the Santa Anita Derby (G1) at 3, while finishing a solid third in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) behind eventual Triple Crown winner American Pharoah  .

Dortmund entered stud at Bonita Farm for $7,500 and then was sold to a South Korean ophthalmologist in 2020.
