This column highlights the performances of maidens who have made no more than five starts and who either sold for more than $500,000 at public auction, have siblings that are grade/group winners, or have dams that are grade/group winners. BloodHorse research shows maiden winners in particular who meet these criteria are more likely to go on to be graded stakes winners.
Belmont
D. J. Stable and Chester and Mary Broman's Coinage won his second start for trainer Mark Casse, taking a 5 1/2-furlong maiden test for New York-bred 2-year-olds by 7 3/4 lengths June 17 at Belmont Park.
Ridden by Junior Alvarado, Coinage raced just behind Silver Samurai , ranging up to the outside of that rival as a quarter-mile went in :22.74 and a half in :46.07. Coming off the turn, Coinage outran him and continued on to the wire in 1:05.37 on a fast track.
Bred by the Bromans, the son of Tapit is the first foal out of the Medaglia d'Oro mare Bar of Gold , another Broman homebred who won the 2017 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1). D. J. Stable purchased the colt from the Sequel New York consignment at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale for $450,000. Coinage debuted at Belmont, placing third May 21 while racing five furlongs against state breds.
Woodbine
Chris Howard's Bid Once won her 2-year-old debut at Woodbine, getting a head in front at the wire in a 4 1/2-furlong maiden race for fillies on the synthetic track June 19.
The California Chrome filly, trained by Ian Howard, dueled with leaders from the gate under jockey Steven Bahen, who sent her to the lead. Bid Once set fractions of :22.27 and :45.59 through four furlongs. In the stretch, Sol Dorado rallied to come within a head of Bid Once, who battled back to complete the distance in :51.97.
Bred by Perry and Denise Martin, Bid Once is out of the D'wildcat mare Wildcat Lily , a grade 3 winner who placed second in the 2013 Test Stakes (G1) and Prioress Stakes (G1) in back-to-back starts. Denise Martin, a co-owner of California Chrome along with her husband Perry, died June 14 at age 61.
Santa Anita
Baoma Corporation's Eda also found the winner's circle in her first start Saturday for trainer Bob Baffert at Santa Anita Park, though it was by the disqualification of Ko Olina , who finished just a nose in front of Eda.
Racing five furlongs under jockey Abel Cedillo, the Munnings filly raced just behind Ko Olina throughout, pressing the leader while the rest of the field fell behind. Ko Olina led by a half-length as a quarter-mile went in :22.53 and a half went in :46.02. Dueling through the stretch, Ko Olina drifted out and bumped Eda, earning the disqualification to second. The pair finished 13 1/2 lengths in front of the third-place finisher in a final time of :58.96 on a fast track.
Bred by Nathan McCauley, Eda is the first foal out of the Lemon Drop Kid mare Show Me. Agent Donato Lanni purchased Eda for $550,000 at the Ocala Breeders' Sales March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training from the consignment of Eddie Woods.
