Glacial breaks his maiden at Churchill Downs

Trainer Norm Casse's talented 2-year-old duo of maiden winners Glacial  and Ontheonesandtwos  will compete against stakes company for the first time in the June 26 $150,000 Bashford Manor Stakes (G3) and $150,000 Debutante Stakes at Churchill Downs. Both races are contested over six furlongs for juveniles on the main track.

"We have some really nice 2-year-olds in our barn and these are two of them," Casse said.

Glacial won in his career debut in front-running fashion May 29 at Churchill. The son of Frosted   completed the 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:04.99. Owned by Robert Masterson, the gray colt will break from post 4 under Joe Talamo as the 3-1 morning line favorite.

"Glacial's gate works really excited us," Casse said. "He's quick from the gate and professional. I really like this horse. Compared to Ontheonesandtwos and (first-out maiden winner) Pretty Birdie, his numbers won't come back as strong. I think he probably ran the better race in his debut of the three. He got away from the gate poorly, rushed up on the rail, and put away a horse that has run twice. And he did all of that comfortably and came back to the barn as if he's never raced. The main thing is I'm excited to see how he runs back. I didn't train them as hard going into their first race so I'd have to think they move forward going into their second race."

The blue-blooded Red Run , out of a full sister to champion Untapable , became the first winner for freshman sire Gun Runner   when he surged clear a 1 3/4-length victor in his career unveiling May 9 at Churchill. Trained by Steve Asmussen, the Winchell Thoroughbreds homebred will be ridden back by Ricardo Santana Jr.

Trainer Todd Pletcher ships in Phoenix Thoroughbred III's Double Thunder  from Monmouth Park, where the son of Super Saver   graduated first time out sprinting 4 1/2 furlongs. The gray will be piloted by John Velazquez in the Bashford Manor.

Ontheonesandtwos wins her debut at Churchill Downs

One race earlier on the card, nine other fillies line up to challenge Casse's Ontheonesandtwos in the Debutante. The Jimmy Creed   filly, listed as the 5-2 morning line favorite for Saturday's race, cruised to her debut victory May 13 at Churchill.

"Ontheonesandtwos has worked three times since she's won," Casse said. "She's a little bit different than Glacial. She's really forward and aggressive in her gallops. She's a sweetheart in the barn but on the racetrack she's down to business."

Owned by Deuce Greathouse, Cindy M. Hutson, and Madaket Stables, Ontheonesandtwos hails from the family of graded stakes winners Sun King, Allamerican Bertie, and Hurricane Bertie. Jockey Florent Geroux retains the mount on Ontheonesandtwos for the Debutante.

Kenny McPeek-trained Behave Virginia , the first winner for freshman sire Unified  , aired a field of maidens by 5 3/4 lengths at Churchill May 28. Brian Hernandez Jr. will retain the mount on the bay in her stakes debut.
