Luz breaks her maiden at Monmouth Park

Monhill Farms' freshman stallion Bethel  was represented by his first starter and first winner July 10 when Luz  rallied for a head victory at Monmouth Park.

Owned and trained by Jose Lozano Sanchez, Luz was fourth early under Paco Lopez in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden claiming event for 2-year-old fillies. Angled out for a late run and up in a final time of 1:06.71 on the fast main track, she went unclaimed for $25,000 and collected a $14,100 check.

Luz was bred in New York by Monhill Farm and Bernardo Mongil IV out of the U S Ranger mare Ranger's Girl, a half sister to Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) winner Evening Attire , who earned just shy of $3 million. Ranger's Girl foaled a full sister to Luz in January.

Advanced Thoroughbreds/Jorge Ramirez purchased Luz for $5,000 from Kim Harrison's consignment to the 2020 Ocala Breeders' Sales Winter Mixed Sale.

Bethel is an 11-year-old son of Pulpit bred by Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider out of the stakes-placed Lord At War mare Cunning, dam of four black-type horses including stakes winner Quota  and grade 2-placed Cunning Play . He raced from ages 2-5, finishing third in the 2013 Pegasus Stakes (G3) at Monmouth. From 27 career starts, he earned a 2-5-3 record and $107,476.

He stood the 2021 season at Monhill Farm in New York for an advertised fee of $2,500.
