No Parole wins the 2020 Woody Stephens at Belmont Park

The Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association announced July 16 the selection of Woody Stephens Stakes Presented by Claiborne Farm (G1) winner No Parole  as its 2020 Louisiana Horse of the Year.

After breaking his maiden in his only start as a juvenile in 2019, No Parole won a Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots allowance race by 13 1/4 lengths in his first start at 3, followed by a 6 1/2 length victory in the Louisiana Premier Night Prince Stakes at Delta Downs. Then, after an unsuccessful bid around two turns in the Rebel Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn Park, he resumed sprinting, winning an allowance optional claiming race in Arkansas before his triumph in the Woody Stephens at Belmont Park.

He finished the year with a ninth-place finish in the H. Allen Jerkens Stakes Presented by Runhappy (G1) at Saratoga Race Course and a sixth in the Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix Stakes (G2) against older horses at Keeneland.

His year-end earnings of $270,866 were the highest of any Louisiana-bred runner last year.

Trained by Tom Amoss and owned solely by Maggi Moss for his initial starts, he raced for most of 2020 owned by Moss and Greg Tramontin.

"So grateful to No Parole—and all involved, a La bred winning a grade 1 and happy to announce he is back in training and doing great!" Moss tweeted Friday.

No Parole is 1-for-3 this year at age 4, last running April 10 at Oaklawn, where he finished seventh in the Count Fleet Sprint Handicap (G3).

Coteau Grove Farms bred the colt, a son of Violence   out of the Bluegrass Cat  mare Plus One . He was bought by Moss for $75,000 at the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale from Select Sales, agent for Coteau Grove Farms.
