Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline (G1) winner Mystic Guide will have surgery to remove a chip in a knee, according to a release from the colt's owner/breeder, Godolphin.
Equine surgeon Dr. Larry Bramlage of Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington will perform the procedure. According to Godolphin, Bramlage expects the surgery to be very straightforward and uncomplicated.
Mystic Guide, a 4-year-old son of Ghostzapper with more than $7.5 million in earnings, finished second as the favorite in the Suburban Stakes (G2) in his most recent start at Belmont Park July 3.
"Expectations for the Suburban were high, so with his runner-up finish, we felt that we should take some precautionary X-rays," said trainer Mike Stidham. "We then followed those up with a PET scan which revealed the chip. It's certainly unfortunate but I am glad that we know the extent of the injury and can move forward from here."
Godolphin USA president Jimmy Bell said, "Mystic Guide is in great hands with Dr. Bramlage so it now becomes a question of doing what's right for the horse. It's too early at this time to make a decision to either continue racing or retire him but we will give him some time to recuperate and we will then make that determination."
