As of July 20, no other horses stabled in Barn 86 at Saratoga Race Course have developed fever or displayed any symptoms of equine herpesvirus-1, according to the New York Racing Association.
The 46 horses stabled in Barn 86, which is in the midst of a 21-day quarantine implemented July 15 when an unnamed, unraced filly trained by Jorge Abreu tested positive for the virus that can cause respiratory and neurological illness, continue to be monitored daily for fever and other signs of illness. The barn is home to horses trained by Abreu and Kenny McPeek.
If there are no additional cases in Barn 86, the quarantine will be lifted Aug. 1.
Abreu's filly began treatment immediately at Rood & Riddle under the care of Dr. Luis Castro. As her condition continued to improve, she was sent to a private farm in Saratoga County July 16, where she is currently recovering under veterinary supervision.
During the quarantine period, horses stabled in Barn 86 are not permitted to enter races or train among the general horse population. These horses have isolated training hours at the Oklahoma Training Track from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. following the conclusion of training for the general horse population. The quarantine also includes the implementation standard safety precautions and biosecurity measures to mitigate risk and prevent further spread of EHV-1.
