Johannes Vermeer wins the 2017 International Stakes at the Curragh Racecourse
The 2017 Emirates Melbourne Cup (G1) runner-up Johannes Vermeer is to stand at Cornwall Park in Victoria for the upcoming breeding season.
Winner of the Criterium International (G1) at Saint-Cloud as a juvenile, Johannes Vermeer ran four times in Australia, which also included placings in the BMW Caulfield Cup (G1) and Ladbrokes Caulfield Stakes (G1) as a 4-year-old.
Johannes Vermeer's last start was a fourth in the 2019 Blamey Stakes (G2) at Flemington Racecourse. He retires with a record of 4-4-3 from 16 trips to the post and £1,053,040 (US$1,422,252) in earnings.
The 8-year-old son of the late Galileo will stand for a fee of AU$11,000 in his opening season.
"We are excited to be standing a horse of the group 1 caliber of Johannes Vermeer," said Cornwall Park's Peter Boyle. "He ticks all the boxes being an eye-catching, tough, high-class performer with an impeccable pedigree."
One of the late Galileo's 92 individual elite-level winners, Johannes Vermeer is out of the lightly-raced Holy Roman Emperor mare Inca Princess, who has produced group 2 winner Elizabeth Browning and group 1-placed Wembley . Both are sired by Galileo.
Bred by Desert Star Phoenix Jvc, Johannes Vermeer went through the ring as a yearling at Goffs Orby, being knocked down to BBA Ireland for €300,000 (US$378,960) from The Premier Consignment.
