North County Guy wins an allowance-level race at Santa Anita Park

Nancy Messineo and Bruce Sands' North County Guy  has been installed as the 7-2 morning-line favorite in a field of 10 for the $150,000 California Dreamin' Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile turf event July 25 at Del Mar for 3-year-olds and up that are California-bred or -sired.

The California Dreamin' is the feature of Sunday's 10-race card, which will also include the $80,000 Daisycutter Handicap, an overnight stakes for fillies and mares ages 3 and up over five furlongs on turf.

North County Guy, a 6-year-old gelding by The Pamplemousse , is a hard trier who has finished in the top three in 20 of his 30 starts, 21 of them coming on turf. The Richard Baltas trainee has put $441,247 in the bank so far. He enters the California Dreamin' off a runner-up effort to returning rival Brandothebartender  in the April 24 Crystal Water Stakes at Santa Anita Park, where he was edged by less than a length. North County Guy won his first two starts of the season in the Jan. 16 Unusual Heat Turf Classic Stakes Presented by City National Bank and a March 7 allowance optional claimer against open company.

He'll break from the outside Sunday under Mario Gutierrez. 

Flawless Racing, Brian Flanagan, and Michael Jarvis' Brandothebartender will break just inside from post 9 with Umberto Rispoli up. The 8-year-old Tribal Rule  gelding has run twice since winning the Crystal Water. He was second beaten less than a length when sprinting in the June 12 Albany Stakes in open company at Golden Gate Fields, then fourth in the June 26 Bertrando Stakes at Los Alamitos Race Course. Trained by Craig Dollase, Brandothebartender has run in the first three spots in 31 of his 46 outings, 36 of them on turf. He's earned  $696,964.

Also in the California Dreamin' is West Point Thoroughbreds, Denise Barker, and William Sandbrook's Galilean , who won this race last year by 1 1/2 lengths. The 5-year-old son of Uncle Mo   is unraced since finishing fourth in the Nov. 22 Cary Grant Stakes, also at Del Mar. Trained by John Sadler, Galilean has won two of three starts on the turf and has six victories from a total of 13 starts, making $583,098. Joe Bravo will ride from post 7.

Brandothebartender and Galilean are the 4-1 co-second choices on the morning line. Completing the field are Desmond Doss , Wound Tight , Unbridled Ethos , Secret Club , Indian Peak , Ward 'n Jerry , and Margot's Boy .

Superstition Tops Daisycutter

Leading the overfilled Daisycutter is Perry and Ramona Bass' Superstition , a 4-year-old Ghostzapper   filly trained by Richard Mandella. She won the restricted Wishing Well Stakes Feb. 15 at Santa Anita two starts back and receives class relief after running third in the June 5 Monrovia Stakes (G2T) at Santa Anita. Superstition is the 5-2 morning-line favorite and will leave post 5 with Flavien Prat in the irons.

Gary Barber, Cecil Barber, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, and Wachtel Stable's Bulletproof One  makes her first start since winning the Sept. 26 Unzip Me Stakes at Santa Anita. Also to be considered is Hronis Racing's Bruja Escarlata , who is unbeaten in three starts and racing in a stakes for the first time.

Querrelle, Gypsy Spirit , Constantia , Lenzi's Lucky Lady , Five Pics Please , Never for Money , and Rakassah  complete the main body of the field. Sadie Bluegrass  and Acting Out  are also eligibles.
