Battling back on the inside after being passed in early stretch by Special Reserve , Calumet Farm's Lexitonian stubbornly won the $350,000 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap (G1) July 31 at Saratoga Race Course.
The 5-year-old homebred son of Speightstown raced six furlongs on a fast track in 1:09.38 under Jose Lezcano, defeating Special Reserve by a half-length. Trained by Jack Sisterson, Lexitonian returned $70 for a $2 win wager.
Whitmore , last year's champion sprinter, ran third, followed by Montauk Traffic in fourth and Firenze Fire in fifth. Favored Mischevious Alex faded to finish eighth after stalking the pace.
