Crystal Cates and Gonzalo Anderson's Diplomatica broke her maiden in the Princess Margaret Stakes (non-black-type) Aug. 6 at Century Mile to give freshman sire War Correspondent his first winner.
The Tim Rycroft-trained filly, who was third in her only other start June 20 at the Alberta track, sat off the pace in third and then fourth under jockey Enrique Gonzalez, then shifted out to the four path before gaining ground to win by 1 1/4 lengths. She bested seven rivals to complete six furlongs on the fast track in 1:12.28.
Bred in Florida by Moonshine Meadows Ranch, Diplomatica is one of seven winners from nine starters produced by the Buddha mare Cloud Rise.
War Correspondent, an 11-year-old son of War Front , is a full brother to Queen Anne (G1) and Juddmonte International (G1) hero and sire Declaration of War . His dam, the Rahy mare Tempo West, is a half sister to Belmont Stakes (G1) winner and sire Union Rags .
Campaigned by Calumet Farm, Sagamore Farm, and Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners the second half of his career, War Correspondent began his career in France before transferred to trainer Christophe Clement in the United States by Kentucky breeder Joseph Allen. The bay's best victories came in the Appleton Stakes (G3T) and Miami Mile Stakes (G3T), and he placed twice in the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap (G1T). After five seasons of racing, he retired with a 5-2-5 record in 16 starts with earnings of $351,989.
