Juddmonte Farms' grade 1-winning homebred Mandaloun has been sidelined from training due to a sore on a heel and will miss the major races in the fall, according to Garrett O'Rourke, general manager of Juddmonte's American operation.
O'Rourke said the 3-year-old colt by Into Mischief will need to be walked for eight weeks, which rules out a start in a Breeders' Cup race Nov. 6 at Del Mar.
"The Saudi Cup is the plan now," O'Rourke said.
With a $20 million purse, the Saudi Cup is the world's richest race. It is run in mid-February at King Abdulaziz Racetrack in Riyadh.
Mandaloun has earned a place among this year's best 3-year-olds with a recent victory via disqualification July 17 in the TVG.com Haskell Stakes (G1) at Monmouth Park. This year he also won the Risen Star Stakes Presented by Lamarque Ford (G2) and the TVG.com Pegasus Stakes.
He also finished second in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) and could be declared the winner following Medina Spirit 's positive test result for the corticosteroid betamethasone. The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission is awaiting follow-up urine sample test results before stewards hold a hearing and make a decision on the Derby results.
As of now, he's won five of eight starts and placed in two other races. He has career earnings of $1,651,252.
Mandaloun is the first black-type winner produced by Brooch , a group 2-winning daughter of Empire Maker .
