A Tapit   filly from the family of classic winners A.P. Indy and Summer Squall was secured by West Point Thoroughbreds, Scarlet Oak Racing, and NBS Stable for $990,000 during the opening Aug. 9 session at The Saratoga Sale, Fasig-Tipton's selected yearling sale in New York.

The filly was consigned by Denali Stud as Hip 61.

"A beautiful filly, vetted really well, deep pedigree, and I'm really excited to get her. Those are the kind of horses that you really need to get out of these sales if you have the resources and the partners," said West Point president and CEO Terry Finley. "Overall the industry's really done a good job. We've had a lot of progress in the last six months and we're finding that people are really interested to get in the business. I think it's a benefit to us all to have people in the business and to play, especially at the top end."

Sisters Cheri Manning and Catherine Manning of Scarlet Oak Racing, who are based in Washington, D.C., have been with West Point for about six years. This spring they sold their software company Triad Interactive and plan to delve into horses full time.

"We're getting more and more involved," Cheri Manning said. "We actually bought an ex-West Point mare who is now our first broodmare (Perfect Kind ). She is in foal to Gift Box  . We're very happy about that. We went from tech to horses full time.

"We have a little bit more tech work to do over the next year but then we're all horses, all the time," she added.

"We have an off-the-track Thoroughbred at home … They're expensive no matter what, but we love them," Catherine Manning said.

Bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm and Winchell Thoroughbreds, Hip 61 is out of the stakes-placed Dixie Union mare Checkupfromzneckup , whose second dam is grade 1-placed Unbridled Lassie (Unbridled).

The filly's third dam, Lassie Connection, is a half sister to European highweight Wolfhound and to Broodmare of the Year Weekend Surprise, the dam of the influential sire A.P. Indy and Summer Squall.

Hip 61 was the third and final purchase of the night either solely by West Point or with partners.

The group also secured a City of Light   colt (Hip 33) for $500,000 with Woodford Racing, and by themselves purchased a Bolt d'Oro   colt (Hip 3) for $260,000.

Hip 33 was consigned by Lane's End and is out of the multiple stakes-winning Kitten's Joy   mare Adorable Miss , a full sister to grade 3 winner Noble Beauty . His third dam is Santa Maria Handicap (G1) winner Favorite Funtime . He was bred in Kentucky by Gage Hill Stables and W. S. Farish.

Hip 3, consigned by Bluewater Sales, is the second foal out of the Speightstown   mare Tarquinia, whose first foal, the 2-year-old filly Shesawildjoker , broke her maiden on debut in June at Belmont Park. The colt's second dam is Molly Pitcher Stakes (G2) winner Luna Vega , who was also grade 1-placed. He was bred in New York by Three Diamonds Farm.
