Having won four grade 1s in New York since August 2020, trainer Jack Sisterson and owner Calumet Farm look to add a fifth, this time in Illinois.
Sisterson starts Calumet Farm's Tango Tango Tango in the $300,000 Bruce D. Stakes (G1T) at Arlington International Racecourse Aug. 14. The son of Tourist is one of just three stakes-winning 3-year-olds in the mile turf contest, previously known as the Secretariat Stakes.
In some of its better renewals this century, the Secretariat was won by such top performers as Highland Reel (2015) and Kitten's Joy (2004). This year's race, which attracted nine entrants, is unlikely to be remembered in the same way given the limited accomplishments of those entered and the absence of foreign participants.
The Bruce D. is the lightest of three grade 1s at Arlington on a Saturday card that includes the $400,000 Beverly D. Stakes (G1T) and $600,000 Mister D. Stakes (G1T), formerly the Arlington Million.
Besides Tango Tango Tango, the other two stakes winners in the Bruce D. are the uncoupled Patricia's Hope-owned and Larry Rivelli-trained stablemates King of Miami and Like a Saltshaker . The former won the $150,000 Mystic Lake Derby at Canterbury Park this year, the latter the $75,000 Fitz Dixon Jr. Memorial Juvenile Stakes at Presque Isle Downs last fall.
Tango Tango Tango defeated King of Miami in recording his first victory in the $100,000 American Derby July 17 at Arlington. King of Miami ran 10th, beaten more than seven lengths.
The American Derby was Tango Tango Tango's first race with blinkers and resulted in a breakthrough performance after three losses. His best previous finish had been as the runner-up in a maiden turf race in his prior race at Ellis Park June 27.
"That was sort of the missing link there, the addition of blinkers," Sisterson said. "It had him more focused and forwardly placed in the race and it sort of got him over the edge."
Declan Cannon, aboard in the American Derby, returns in the irons. Cannon seeks his first grade 1 victory after riding four winners in grade 3s, two at Arlington.
Sisterson considers the Bruce D. a rewarding opportunity for the progressive Tango Tango Tango, who breezed a half-mile on dirt at Keeneland in :46 3/5 Aug. 6.
"I don't think any grade 1 is easy, but it might not be the toughest," he said. "Fingers crossed everyone gets a clean trip and the best horse wins on the day."
Though he lacks stakes experience, Homewrecker Racing Stable's Point Me By will start as one of the favorites after a close fourth-place finish in a first-level allowance race at Saratoga Race Course July 15. That came after a debut maiden victory at Churchill Downs June 20 in a turf sprint for trainer Eddie Kenneally.
Luis Saez, in town Saturday from New York, picks up the mount.
Besides three grade 1s, five other stakes are at Arlington Saturday, including the $100,000 Pucker Up (G3T) for 3-year-old fillies.
Shantisara , runner-up in the Boiling Springs Stakes at Monmouth Park in her U.S. debut for trainer Chad Brown and owners Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables, and Robert LaPenta, faces the graded-placed Graham Motion trainee Oyster Box and others with local experience.
Brown is a two-time winner of the Pucker Up, most recently taking it during its last running in 2019 with Cafe Americano .
The 1 1/8-mile turf race also drew 2-3-4 finishers from the Hatoof Stakes at Arlington July 17—Flown , Double Blessed , and Spritz —and 8 1/2-length maiden winner Serene . Both Godolphin's Serene and Gainesway Stable's Oyster Box are by Tapit .
