Tizamagician wins the Cougar II Stakes at Del Mar

MyRacehorse and Spendthrift Farm's Tizamagician  was one of five serious TVG Pacific Classic (G1) nominees to work between Del Mar and Saratoga Race Course Aug. 14, a week out from Del Mar's summer feature.

The Richard Mandella trainee was sent out for a five-furlong work in 1:00 with an interim clocking of :36 1/5 under exercise rider Austin Solis, the son of retired Hall of Fame jockey Alex Solis.

"He looked great. Couldn't be better," Mandella said of the 4-year-old Tiznow  colt.

Tizamagician stamped himself as a Pacific Classic contender by winning the 1 1/2-mile Cougar II Stakes (G3) July 18 at Del Mar.

Earlier Saturday morning, Summer Wind Equine's Magic On Tap  worked five furlongs in :59 under jockey Abel Cedillo for trainer Bob Baffert. He clocked the fastest time of 82 at the distance while working in company with stablemate Private Mission , who received the same time.

"It went well. We're running in the Pacific Classic," Baffert told Del Mar media via text.

Magic On Tap completed a series of three five-furlong workouts since finishing fifth in the July 17 San Diego Handicap (G2) at Del Mar. A stumble at the start compromised the 5-year-old son of Tapit  's chances in the 1 1/16-mile prep for the Pacific Classic, which is run at 1 1/4 miles. Magic On Tap won the seven-furlong Triple Bend Stakes (G2) May 29 at Santa Anita Park.

Mike Maker-trained Mo Mosa  went five furlongs in 1:00 3/5 at Del Mar under exercise rider Marcelo Medina in a team work with stablemate Fight On . Track clockers recorded splits of :11 2/5, :23, :35 2/5, and a final quarter in :25 1/5.

The 4-year-old Uncle Mo   colt is a homebred for Perry Martin and his late wife, Denise, who died June 14.

"It was a great work, we were very pleased with it," said Nolan Ramsey, in charge of Maker's Del Mar string. "We need to speak with the owners. The Pat O'Brien (G2, at seven furlongs) is an option, but (the Pacific Classic) is still on the table for discussion."

Mo Mosa finished fourth in the San Diego shipping in from a victory in the May 31 Steve Sexton Mile Stakes (G3) at Lone Star Park.

Flawless Racing, Masino Racing Stable, Brian Flanagan, and Michael Jarvis' Cupid's Claws , trained by Craig Dollase, worked five furlongs from the gate at Del Mar in 1:00 under Umberto Rispoli.

"He looked good and he finished up very well," Dollase said. "It's a go for the Pacific Classic."

At Saratoga, St. Elias Stable's Dr Post  worked four furlongs in :49.22 for trainer Todd Pletcher. The 4-year-old Quality Road   colt won the July 17 Monmouth Cup Stakes (G3) at Monmouth Park in his most recent start.

"We're pleased with his workout and he'll go west," Pletcher said. "He is scheduled to ship on Tuesday."

The Great One  is also nominated to the Pacific Classic and worked six furlongs in 1:13 1/5 Saturday at Del Mar, but trainer Doug O'Neill said the 3-year-old Nyquist colt is more likely to stay in competition with his age group in the Aug. 29 Shared Belief Stakes.

Trainer Michael McCarthy said Independence Hall , who worked four furlongs in :48 4/5 Friday, still has the Aug. 27 Charles Town Classic (G2) as the main target.

The Pacific Classic is part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series and awards the winner with a berth in the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) back at Del Mar Nov. 6.
