Having battled earlier this summer in an allowance optional claimer, Scotish Star and Stellar Sound meet again Aug. 20 with black type at stake in the $100,000 Rancho Bernardo Handicap (G3) at Del Mar. The 6 1/2-furlong dirt race drew three other fillies and mares.
LNJ Foxwoods and La Providencia's Scotish Star and Don Alberto Stable's Stellar Sound are two of the favorites at 9-5 and 2-1 morning-line odds, respectively, just behind Hronis Racing's Edgeway at 8-5.
Scotish Star will be making her second U.S. start for Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella. The Argentinian miss by the Deputy Minister stallion Key Deputy won twice easily in her native land as a 2-year-old and then just missed in her six-panel North American debut at Del Mar July 29 when beaten a neck by Stellar Sound. She gets leading rider Flavien Prat back in the irons for the Rancho Bernardo.
Stellar Sound, a gray by Tapit , is a three-time winner who has been graded stakes-placed multiple times. Trainer Mike McCarthy has designated rider Juan Hernandez to ride.
The John Sadler-trained Edgeway, a daughter of Competitive Edge , has won four of her seven outings and banked $319,200. She captured the Carousel Stakes at Oaklawn Park in April before weakening to run a distant fourth in the July 5 Great Lady M Stakes (G2) at Los Alamitos Race Course.
Candura and Proud Emma complete the field.
