Fulsome captures the Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs

Although the two biggest races at Parx Racing, the Pennsylvania Derby (G1) and Cotillion Stakes (G1), aren't until Sept. 25, an early sampling of what's come is on display there Aug. 24.

Tuesday's $300,000 Smarty Jones Stakes (G3) and $150,000 Cathryn Sophia Stakes serve as respective preps for the Pennsylvania Derby and Cotillion. The Smarty Jones is an open race for 3-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles, while the Cathryn Sophia is for 3-year-old fillies at a mile and 70 yards.

Both the Smarty Jones and Cathryn Sophia drew graded stakes winners. Matt Winn Stakes (G3) victor Fulsome  is the 8-5 favorite in the Smarty Jones, while Leader of the Band , winner of the Monmouth Oaks (G3), heads the Cathryn Sophia.

Vequist , last year's champion 2-year-old filly, is also entered in the Cathryn Sophia but will be scratched, Horse Racing Nation reported.

Following the Matt Winn, Fulsome (Into Mischief  ) ran third at 2-5 odds in the July 7 Indiana Derby (G3) for owner/breeder Juddmonte and trainer Brad Cox. The Smarty Jones represents an opportunity to bounce back with jockey Florent Geroux in the saddle.

Butch Reid trains Cash Is King and LC Racing's Ridin With Biden , the 7-2 second favorite on the morning line for the Smarty Jones. Ridin With Biden ran second in the Dwyer Stakes (G3) in his first start in stakes company July 5.
