Limited Liability wins his debut at Saratoga Race Course

While the surface, surroundings, and distance will be the same, the stakes will be much higher as Stuart Janney III's homebred Limited Liability  makes the step up from a debut maiden score to graded company in the $150,000 With Anticipation Stakes (G3T) Sept. 1 at Saratoga Race Course.

The 2-year-old Kitten's Joy   colt trained by Shug McGaughey had been preparing for his debut at the Fair Hill Training Center in Elkton, Md., prior to his July 31 unveiling at 1 1/16 miles on the Mellon turf.

"We did like him. He was at Fair Hill for a good while and he was up here long enough," McGaughey said. "I had worked him on the Tapeta down there, and he really liked it."

In his debut, Limited Liability had one of seven rivals beat before rallying five-wide through the stretch and sweeping past to win by 2 3/4 lengths.

"I was very impressed with his race. I've been very impressed since he ran, too," McGaughey said. "He's training awfully well. I'm looking forward to it. I think he deserves to be in there."

Jose Ortiz, up for his debut, gets the return call from post 1. Limited Liability shares high weight of 122 pounds.

Another Kitten's Joy colt with a debut win at the distance, albeit over Saratoga's inner turf, is Klaravich Stables' Portfolio Company . Sent off as the favorite July 17, the Chad Brown trainee was rank early before settling down and taking a 2 1/2-length lead into the stretch, holding on to win by three-quarters of a length. Portfolio Company will also carry 122 pounds. Irad Ortiz Jr. retains the mount from post 4.

Portfolio Company is a full brother to stakes winners Queen'splatekitten  and Charming Kitten

Trainer Todd Pletcher has captured a record six editions of the With Anticipation. This year he will be represented by Donegal Racing's Gooch Go Bragh . The Distorted Humor   colt also debuted at Saratoga, running second in a 1 1/16-mile maiden race Aug. 7 on the inner turf course.

D. J. Stable and Chester and Mary Broman's Coinage is entered to make his turf debut for trainer Mark Casse. He broke his maiden sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs June 17 at Belmont Park and ran third in the six-furlong Rick Violette July 21 at Saratoga, both against fellow New York-breds. The Tapit   colt out of 2017 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) winner Bar of Gold  was also bred by the Bromans. D. J. Stable went to $450,000 for the colt when Sequel New York consigned him to the 2020 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Silipo , trained by Bruce Brown, and a pair of entrants from trainer and co-owner James Chapman in Kavod  and Ready to March  complete the field.
