D. J. Stable and Chester and Mary Broman's Coinage made his turf, open-company, and two-turn debut a winning one in the Sept. 1, $150,000 With Anticipation Stakes (G3T), a 1 1/16-mile inner turf test for juveniles at Saratoga Race Course.
Bred in New York by the Bromans, the Tapit chestnut is out of the versatile Medaglia d'Oro mare Bar of Gold , who captured the 2017 Yaddo Stakes on the Saratoga turf the same year she took the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) on the Del Mar main track.
Chester Broman said he was surprised by the ease of the gate-to-wire score, despite jockey Junior Alvarado relaying their strategy pre-race.
"When we were in the paddock, (Alvarado) said he was going to put him on the lead and said, 'They'll have to catch me,'" Broman indicated. "That's easy to say, but they couldn't catch him. Those were pretty good horses, too."
Terrific to have the Bromans on hand to enjoy their latest #NYbred star! Chester joined team @markecasse groom Humberto to lead Coinage to the #Saratoga winner's circle after the G3 With Anticipation. Humberto cared for their millionaire Highway Star for @RuracingUbillo. pic.twitter.com/Zo50FUFBi5

Trained by Hall of Famer Mark Casse, Coinage took advantage of comfortable fractions of :25.66, :50.65, and 1:15.59 and had plenty in reserve to kick away from Portfolio Company in the lane. He scored by two lengths over the keen-racing Portfolio Company, completing the distance in 1:43.69 on firm ground.
Limited Liability , the 4-5 favorite, closed from last of six to be a non-threatening third.
"He's a good horse. He has a high-cruising speed," Casse said of Coinage, who was previously third against New York-breds in the Rick Violette Stakes in his third career start. "We breezed him over the turf a couple of times as we like to do. Training horses is like putting a puzzle together. You have to keep trying the pieces until figuring out where they fit. We figured it out today."
The victory marked the second stakes score of the meet for Casse following Got Stormy 's Fourstardave Handicap (G1T) triumph last month.
Alvarado, whose previous Spa stakes wins this summer include the Saratoga Special Stakes Presented by Miller Lite (G2) with High Oak and the Summer Colony Stakes with Horologist , said he felt confident throughout.
"Turning for home, I asked him and he started moving very quick, and I said, 'There's no way anybody can go by me,'" he noted. "Going for home from the quarter pole to the wire, I was pretty confident with what I had at that point."
Portfolio Company, a first-out maiden winner for meet-leading trainer Chad Brown, finished 3 1/2 lengths ahead of Limited Liability. Gooch Go Bragh , Kavod , and Silipo rounded out the order of finish. Ready to March was scratched.
Coinage ($15.80), a $450,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase last year by D. J. Stable, improved his record to 2-0-2 from four starts. Sequel New York sold him last year on behalf of the Bromans, who stayed in as co-owners.
Following Coinage, her first foal, Bar of Gold produced a yearling colt by Justify , who sold for $825,000 to David Hudson, with Travis Durr as agent, out of Sequel New York's consignment to The Saratoga Sale, Fasig-Tipton's selected yearling sale in New York. Bar of Gold foaled a Tapit colt this year and was bred to Quality Road for 2022.
