Dogtag is on a streak of three straight runner-up finishes.
Tapwater has finished third in her last three.
So Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella isn't looking for big improvement from his two entrants Sept. 4 in the $200,000 John C. Mabee Stakes (G2T). Just a little from either might suffice in the 1 1/8-mile turf event for older fillies and mares.
"Both of them have run races that they maybe should have won. So I put them both in and I double up my chances," Mandella said.
Dogtag and Tapwater are both gray, 5-year-old homebred mares for LNJ Foxwoods. Dogtag is a daughter of War Front . Tapwater was sired by Tapit .
Dogtag produced second-place results in the Royal Heroine Stakes (G2T) in April and in the listed Possibly Perfect Stakes in June at Santa Anita Park, and in the Aug. 7 Yellow Ribbon Handicap (G2T) at Del Mar. The margins ranged from a head to a half-length.
Tapwater's string of thirds started with the Santa Barbara Stakes (G3T) in May at Santa Anita and continued at Del Mar in the July 17 Osunitas Stakes and the Aug. 14 CTT & TOC Stakes.
Dogtag is the slight 3-1 favorite in a nine-horse field over Slam Dunk Racing, Stable Currency, and James D. Branham's Gamely Stakes (G1T) winner Maxim Rate (7-2), who looks to rebound from a third in the Yellow Ribbon for trainer Simon Callaghan.
