Adversity breaks her maiden at Saratoga Race Course

A pair of debut winners Sept. 6 at Saratoga Race Course and Monmouth Park underscored the racing community's loss when Juddmonte Farms' freshman sire Arrogate  died at 7 years old in 2020 after battling a neurological illness.

Adversity , a New York-bred filly out of the grade 1 winner Artemis Agrotera (Roman Ruler), reached the milestone first when she captured a 5 1/2-furling maiden special weight in sloppy conditions at Saratoga by 2 1/4 lengths. The filly is raced by D.J. Stable and trained by Mark Casse. Richardo Santana Jr. held the reins.

Chester and Mary Broman, who bred and raced Artemis Agrotera, also bred Adversity. The longtime prominent owner/breeders sold the filly to D.J. Stable for $335,000 at this year's Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale through Sequel Bloodstock. Adversity is now her dam's third winner from as many to race, which include stakes winner Chestertown .

Affable Monarch breaks his maiden at Monmouth Park

About a half-hour after Adversity crossed the wire, the colt Affable Monarch  made it a double in Race 4 at Monmouth Park, a six-furlong maiden special weight on the main track. Bred and raced by Richard Santulli's Colts Neck Stables, Affable Monarch won by 6 1/2 lengths with Tomas Mejia in the irons. The Kentucky-bred colt is trained by Jorge Duarte Jr.

Affable Monarch is out of multiple grade 3 winner Social Queen  (Dynaformer), who bloodstock agent Mike Ryan bought for $275,000 at the 2005 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Social Queen raced for Jayeff B Stables, of which Santulli was a partner, and won the 2008 Eatontown Handicap (G3T) at Monmouth and the Gallorette Handicap (G3T) at Pimlico Race Course.

Social Queen also is the dam of Santulli homebred Force the Pass , who won the 2015 Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes (G1T) at Belmont Park.

Arrogate, who was bred by Clearsky Farms out of the Distorted Humor   mare Bubbler, did not debut until April of his 3-year-old year, but quickly took command of his division. He earned the 2016 champion 3-year-old title after scoring five consecutive wins that culminated in victories in the Travers Stakes (G1)—which he won by 13 1/2 lengths while breaking a 36-year-old track record for 1 1/4 miles—and the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), in which he beat 2016 Horse of the Year California Chrome  .

He kicked off his 4-year-old season by winning the inaugural $12 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) in track-record time, and followed with a hard to believe last-to-first win in the $10 million Dubai World Cup Sponsored By Emirates Airline (G1). Arrogate retired with a 7-1-1 record from 11 starts is the richest North American racehorse with earnings of $17,422,600.

Arrogate stood for $50,000 his last season at Juddmonte. He is represented by 58 yearlings cataloged in the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, with nine in Book 1 and 22 in Book 2.
