Myopic wins a maiden race at Indiana Grand this summer

Myopic, a $200,000 buy at the July Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale at Fasig-Tipton this summer, can recoup a portion of his purchase price with a victory in the CA$125,000 Canadian Derby (G3) Sept. 11 at Century Mile Racetrack and Casino. The 3-year-old son of Candy Ride   is among 11 3-year-olds entered in the 1 1/4-mile dirt race.

The 92nd running of the Canadian Derby is one of four stakes Saturday at the Edmonton track.

Acquired by agent Nick Hines for Clayton Wiest from the Elite consignment at Fasig-Tipton in Kentucky, Myopic now races for a partnership that includes Wiest and Arnold Bennewith, Rick and Lana Wiest, Randy Howg, R6 Stables, and Gary Kropp. Robertino Diodoro trains the colt, who finished second in the Aug. 2 Manitoba Derby in his only start since the sale. He is 1-for-4 overall, with his victory coming by six lengths against maidens at Indiana Grand in June.

Defeating him in the Manitoba Derby was Adam Isfeld's Uncharacteristic  (Texas Wildcatter ), who caught Myopic after the latter dueled with two longshots early. A rewarding claim for CA$8,000 last fall at Hastings Racecourse, Uncharacteristic pulled clear by 1 1/4 lengths. Robert VanOverschot trains.

Kirk Sutherland's Tony's Tapit  (Tonalist  ), a winner of nine races from 15 starts, takes a five-race win streak into the Canadian Derby for trainer Jim Brown.
