Having already captured one derby in Western Canada, Adam Isfeld's Uncharacteristic added a second when he cleared the frontrunners to win the CA$124,875 (US$98,377) Canadian Derby (G3) Sept. 11 at Century Mile Racetrack and Casino.
The 3-year-old Texas Wildcatter gelding took last month's Manitoba Derby at Assinboia Downs, defeating the favorite Myopic by 1 1/4 lengths at nine furlongs. Stretched out another eighth-mile for the Canadian Derby, Uncharacteristic again bested favored Myopic, this time by three-quarters of a length.
Smart Play set the pace with Myopic a head back in second through fractions of :23.66, :48,49, 1:13.15, and 1:37.86. Uncharacteristic, ridden by Alexander Marti, tracked the pace on the inside. Marti angled his mount out for the final stretch run and Uncharacteristic ($9.20) got up to complete the 1 1/4 miles on the fast track in 2:04.16.
Myopic got the better of Smart Play by a neck to finish second in the 11-horse field.
Robert VanOverschot trains Uncharacteristic, who was claimed for CA$8,000 last September at Hastings Racecourse from owner/breeder/trainer Glen Todd.
Uncharacteristic was bred in Kentucky out of the Macho Uno mare My Kentucky Rose. His 2-year-old Tapiture half sister Wine Taster is a winner and his dam also has a yearling Tapwrit colt named Extraordinaire. My Kentucky Rose was bred to Frosted for 2022.
From six starts, Uncharacteristic has a 3-3-0 record and has earned $120,806.
