Materiality (above after winning the Islamorada Handicap) looks poised for a breakout performance in the Florida Derby. (Photo by Leslie Martin/Gulfstream Park)
Two for two lifetime, Materiality is the most lightly raced runner in the $1-million Florida Derby on Saturday at Gulfstream Park with just two starts.
He’s raced twice at Gulfstream Park and won easily in each by a combined margin of ten lengths, showing a stalking style.
His dam (mother), Wildwood Flower, produced a couple of average racehorses before his half-sister (same dam, different sire [father]) My Miss Sophia hit the track. My Miss Sophia ran second in the Kentucky Oaks at 1 1/8 miles (running an 80 final Predicteform figure!) behind Untapable, and earned more than $400,000 in her short racing career.
If quality siblings come in pairs, then Materiality has plenty of upside to improve.
