BloodHorse, Keeneland Honored With 11 Media Awards

BloodHorse and Keeneland Magazine were honored with 11 media awards, including six first-place awards, during the Sept. 18 American Horse Publications' "Back in the Saddle" conference held in Irving, Texas.

BloodHorse.com and BloodHorse Daily were both recognized as the best of their categories, receiving first-place awards in Publishing Media Equine-Related Website and Publishing Media Equine-Related Electronic Publication, respectively.

BloodHorse visuals director Anne M. Eberhardt won first-place in the Editorial Human-Animal Bond Photo division with an image of WinStar Farm trainer Destin Heath that was included in BloodHorse magazine's "Daily Life" series and also included in a photo essay on BloodHorse.com. In the image, Heath is checking on his pony Fred following morning works.

A native of Oklahoma, Heath started working at WinStar Farm on October 10, 2014, and became the farm trainer in October of 2018. Winning image in the 2021 AHP Media Awards in the Human-Animal Bond category.

Photo Essay: Gravitational Pull

Keeneland Magazine was recognized as the best publication in the General Excellence for Self-Supported Publications category. Submitted for consideration were the Summer 2020 and Winter 2020 issues. Jackie Duke is the editor of Keeneland Magazine, which is produced by creative services director Jennifer Singleton, art director Catherine Nichols, copy editor Tom Hall, and Eberhardt.

Two other first-place awards went to Keeneland Magazine in the Self-Supported Publication Feature Single Article category for a piece written by Mary Jean Wall about sculptor Jocelyn Russell, who created a larger-than-life bronze of Secretariat on display at the intersection of Alexandria Road and Old Frankfort Pike in Lexington; and, in the Self-Supported Publication Cover Page category for the Winter 2020 edition cover created by Nichols.

BloodHorse received two second-place awards. One award was in the Equine-Related Editorial Series category for its "First Saturday in May" series of breeders, owners, and trainers reliving their Kentucky Derby (G1) victories that appeared in BloodHorse Daily. The other was given in the Self-Supported Publication Editorial Design category for the "Daily Life" series that gave a behind-the-scenes look at the work of a farrier, a stallion manager, exercise rider, and farm trainer that appeared in BloodHorse magazine.

Keeneland Magazine won second-place honors in the Self-Supported Publication Personality Profile Single Article category for a feature written by Lenny Shulman about Arthur Hancock III that appeared in the Spring 2020 edition. In this same category, BloodHorse editorial director Clair Crosby received an honorable mention for a feature about six-time Sovereign Award winner Pink Lloyd that appeared in the Dec. 12, 2020, edition of BloodHorse magazine.

Keeneland also won third-place honors in the Self-Supported Publication Editorial Design category for a feature about wood sculptor Kiptoo Tarus that appeared in the Winter 2020 edition.

AHP has recognized the best of equine publications for 45 years. Ninety-eight association members, 33 publishing media members, 19 media professional members, and 14 business members submitted 643 entries from 2020. Of the 98 participants who entered, 66 moved forward to place in the top five in one or more of the 56 classes.
