Sweet Dani Girl wins over Famed at Churchill Downs

Famed , a much-awaited half sister to four-time grade 1 winner Essential Quality , made her debut Sept. 26 in the eighth race at Churchill Downs, but as she made her move at the top of the turn for home, Sweet Dani Girl  gave pursuit and ran her down in the stretch of the six-furlong maiden test to win by a length at odds of 45-1.

Trained by Brad Cox for Godolphin, Famed went off as the 4-5 favorite under jockey Florent Geroux. The 2-year-old daughter of Uncle Mo   was settled in third as Beautiful Empire  set a :21.37 quarter-mile.

Before the top of the turn, Famed moved into second and continued to improve her position around the turn, leading at the half-mile mark, which went in :44.86.

But right behind her, Sweet Dani Girl tracked in third on the outside. As the pair swung into the stretch, Sweet Dani Girl looked like momentum was on her side and the Jess's Dream   filly rallied past the favorite late in the stretch under jockey Martin Garcia to finish in a final time of 1:09.69 on a fast track.

Both fillies were making their first start.

Bred in Florida by J & J Stables and her trainer Carlo Vaccarezza, Sweet Dani Girl is owned by J & J in partnership with Nicholas Vaccarezza. She is the second foal out of the unraced Scat Daddy mare My Sweet Dani Girl. She gave every indication she was ready to race with two bullet works at Ellis Park, her latest coming Sept. 20 when she completed four furlongs in :47 2/5 to be the fastest of 16 at the distance that day.
