American Pharoah Tops KDFW Pool 4

The Kentucky Derby Future Wager's final pool closed March 29 with champion American Pharoah the slight 5-1 favorite and unbeaten Dortmund a close second choice at 6-1.
American Pharoah, who made the recent Rebel (gr. II) at Oaklawn Park his third victory in four races, was the fans' choice among 24 betting interests to win the 141st Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) at Churchill Downs May 2. Grade I-winning stablemate Dortmund is the likely favorite in the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) April 4.
Mubtaahij, an eight-length winner of the S & M Al Naboodah Group United Arab Emirates Derby (UAE-II) March 28 at Meydan, was tabbed the third choice at 8-1. He was followed by Tampa Bay Derby (gr. II) winner Carpe Diem (10-1), Besilu Stables Florida Derby (gr. I) winner Materiality (12-1), Sunland Derby (gr. III) winner Firing Line (13-1), and Louisiana Derby (gr. II) winner International Star (17-1).
The always popular mutuel field, the "All Others" interest, which includes all 3-year-olds other than the 23 individuals in the pool, closed at odds of 11-1, the fourth choice, after being favored in the three previous 2015 pools.
Pool 4 wagering began March 27 at noon EDT and closed 6 p.m. Sunday, totaling $417,673. There was $273,017 bet to win and $144,456 in exacta wagers. Pool 4 wagering increased by 24% from the 2014 total of $336,717.
Total betting across the four Kentucky Derby Future Wager pools was $1,522,976. The overall total was second-highest in the history of the bet, which debuted in 1999, and was an increase of 15% over total betting of $1,324,466 in 2014. The Future Wager was conducted in a three-pool format until it expanded last year to include a fourth pool, scheduled in November of the previous year.
Pool 4 featured seven individual horses that had not been part of Pool 3, including six newcomers that were not part of any of 2015's three previous pools. Mubtaahij and Materiality attracted the strongest support among Pool 4's new additions. The others were Dubai Sky (23-1), Ami's Flatter (91-1), Bold Conquest (91-1) and Madefromlucky (92-1). Frosted (40-1) appeared as a wagering interest in Pools 1 and 2, but was not among the 23 individuals listed in Pool 3.
