The Arqana October Yearling Sale coincides with a number of potentially informative 2-year-old races across the road and the last-to-first success of Rosacea for owner/breeder Jurgen Winter in the Oct. 19 Prix des Reservoirs (G3) paid further dividends for his Haras de la Perelle breeding operation 24 hours later.
Rosacea is by crack German miler Soldier Hollow and her year-younger sister (Lot 377) by Tamayuz made €125,000 (US$145,528) early in the session.
Both fillies are out of the winning Zamindar mare Relizane, whose sister Reggane flew the flag for Winter and trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre, finding only Ghanaati too strong in the 2009 Coronation Stakes (G1) before earning her ultimate day in the sun in Woodbine's E. P. Taylor Stakes Presented by Fly Emirates (G1T) the following October.
Mathieu Alex stood alongside John Hammond as the latter struck the decisive blow and the former and current driving forces behind Haras de Montfort et Preaux will each take an interest in the filly.
"She's for a partnership between Gerard Augustin-Normand and Nurlan Bizakov," said Hammond.
"She's a pretty filly who has plenty of residual value, with the nice family and the sister who won yesterday. We hope she can run a bit."
The Tamayuz filly is the second lot from Relizane to realize six figures in the Deauville ring—her Holy Roman Emperor brother Royal Guard having been sold for €110,000 ($122,001) this week two years ago—while she foaled a Soldier Hollow full sister to Rosacea in February.
Third dam Raintree Renegade was third in the Prix de Diane Hermes (French Oaks, G1) for former LA Kings owner Bruce McNall and was one of the foundation mares acquired shortly after Winter began La Perelle in 1995.
Reynier to Train Le Havre Colt
Haras d'Ombreville's Le Havre colt (Lot 396) out of the group 3-placed sprinter Sage Melody was the subject of a fierce battle involving multiple agents on opposite sides of the Arqana ring.
Standing in the passage and taking instruction from John Hammond, Federico Barberini tried valiantly to fight off the attentions of an unseen counter-bidder in the corridor to the right of the rostrum.
At €120,000 ($139,706) they had to give way and it was agents Alain Decrion and Nicolas de Watrigant, along with owner Jean-Claude Seroul, who were revealed to comprise the victorious party.
The colt's Wootton Bassett brother Millau has twice finished second at listed level over sprint distances this season, while further back on the page can be found Prix Vermeille Hermitage Barriere de la Baule (G1) and Vodafone Nassau Stakes (G1) runner-up Ana Marie and the U.S. grade 2-winning miler Charmo .
Seroul's silks have been carried to group 1 success this season by Skalleti and Marianafoot , and their trainer Jerome Reynier will also take charge of the new purchase.
"The mare was a good racehorse and has already proved herself a good producer as well," said Reynier. "Millau looks certain to be a good 4-year-old next season at sprint trips.
"This colt is very athletic and we liked him a lot so we hope he can continue the family tradition. He ticked plenty of boxes and we've ended up paying on the nose of what I valued him at. We knew there were several people interested."
Shalaa Filly Netted for Creighton, Kent
Late in the day Haras de la Hotellerie registered a notable success with a daughter of Shalaa (Lot 521) out of the Declaration of War mare Crystal War, a full sister to Vodafone Epsom Derby (G1) runner-up and Betfair.com St. Leger (G1) hero Rule of Law's dam Crystal Crossing.
The winning bid was struck at €110,000 ($128,064) on behalf of Daniel Creighton, who reported that the Shalaa was top of his list of fillies for the week.
The new owner is Rangers forward Ryan Kent—whose colors were carried at Royal Ascot this year by Royal Emerther in the Windsor Castle Stakes—and she will be trained by Karl Burke.
Hotellerie also posted another significant sale when the penultimate lot through the ring, a Gleneagles filly (Lot 539) out of the Sea The Stars mare Douda from the immediate family of Diamond Tango and Desert Skyline , made €85,000 ($98,958).
Tina Rau secured her for regular client Stella Thayer, the owner of group 1 winner Wonderment and Tampa Bay, and will be trained by Nicolas Clement.
"She is just an awesome mover who is going to change lots and develop lots," said Rau. "We love the pedigree, she's the first foal out of a winning mare, you've got Sea The Stars, and it's a lovely family."
Perfect Power Connection in Almanzor Colt
Breeder Pierre Cornou was reluctant to part with an Almanzor colt (Lot 395) brought to market by La Motteraye Consignment and will retain a share after agent Ghislain Bozo gave €100,000 ($116,422).
The Shamardal mare Sagariya was acquired for €120,000 ($155,112) from the Aga Khan draft here in 2012 and the cross has already rung the tills in Deauville once, with the colt's Wootton Bassett brother selling for €125,000 ($142,975) at the 2018 August Yearling sale.
Recent Darley Prix Morny (G1) and Juddmonte Middle Park (G1) hero Perfect Power appears under second dam Saga d'Ouilly, a full sister to 1998 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1) winner Sagamix .
Explaining the deal, Bozo said, "The breeder wanted to keep a part of the horse and so we'll put together a partnership. He will be sent into training with Edouard Monfort. He may be only of average size but he's a really good-looking colt and the family has done well recently."
Don Returns to Source for Recoletos Filly
A filly from the first crop of Haras du Quesnay sire Recoletos (Lot 485) attracted the attention as darkness fell on Wednesday, with Stroud Coleman Bloodstock leading the bidding at €80,000 ($93,137).
Owner Anoj Don signed the docket, having already raced her American Post brother, Pride of America.
Don confirmed that the filly would go into training in France, with a trainer to be decided later. He currently has horses in training with Chantilly-based Gavin Hernon.
She is out of the unraced Anabaa mare Atarfe and is from the family of Arasin, who went on to score at listed level in Hong Kong as Helene Spirit.
Rouget Mines Family History
Jean-Claude Rouget needs no convincing of the quality of Zelzal the racehorse and he also trains the sire's first stakes winner from his debut crop, having sent out the 2-year-old filly Zelda to win the listed Prix Saraca at Chantilly earlier this month.
Rouget went to €80,000 to secure Haras de Castillon's colt (Lot 439) out of the winning Sunday Break mare Texalila.
The trainer's Prix d'Ispahan (G1) hero Never On Sunday also appears under the third dam. Two lots later Rouget also struck at €57,000 ($66,360) for a Le Havre colt (Lot 441) out of Texanne, being Never On Sunday's full sister, while a third member of the same Castillon family, a filly (Lot 440) by Almanzor, was knocked down to Anne-Sophie Yoh-Benet for €75,000 ($87,316).
Seabhac on Mark for Haras d'Ellon
Seabhac has now completed three covering seasons at Haras de Saint-Arnoult and the son of Scat Daddy 's first runners in France are awaited with plenty of interest next spring.
A filly (Lot 413) consigned by Thierry de la Heronniere's Haras d'Ellon encouraged the bidders to come out in force and it was Prime Equestrian who won out at €77,000 ($89,645) for the sister to prolific winner Shinning Ocean, the filly being out of a Medicean daughter of the Japan Racing Association Sceptre Stakes winner Royal Confidence.
